Pentax released its new 40mm f/2.8 XS SMC DA "pancake" lens with the K-01 mirrorless camera, making for a very small and portable camera-lens combination. With its K-mount, the lens is compatible with other Pentax cameras, so we took the opportunity to put it through its paces in our test lab. Does smaller become better? Check out the results for yourself in our full review of the Pentax 40mm f/2.8 XS SMC DA "pancake" lens.

Apple's iPhone 4S is an impressive computing and communication tool, and one of its strengths is a better camera than you can find in most dumb phones, to be sure. Enhanced by downloadable apps, Apple also souped up the iPhone 4S camera in its latest hardware rev, with a higher-resolution sensor, a faster lens, support for Full HD video, and access to the smartphone's more powerful processor. Our tests show that it's improved in a few ways, with better color and resolution, as well as performance, but it's not such a great leap that we'd call it radically improved. We still recommend it...

Some love it for its incredibly compact design: there is truly no other interchangeable-lens camera that comes close to the size and weight of the Q, especially when one takes into account the optics. Others decry its smaller-than-average image sensor, and the limitations that brings in a number of areas. Both camps have a point: the Pentax Q certainly fulfils on the portability promise of mirrorless like no other camera, but Pentax was still bound by the laws of physics, and it had to make some significant...

There's a good reason not to buy Photoshop Touch, although it has nothing to do with how well the feature set has been implemented.

In fact, we enjoyed composing images with it and even exchanging files with its big brother using Adobe's new Creative Cloud. Touch includes Layers (which you can review in 3D) but it also brings the Healing Brush and Squiggle Selections to your tablet. Pretty powerful tools.

Like Photoshop itself, it isn't designed for processing a card-load of images or organizing your photo archive. But when your camera is just the starting point and your imagination is...

The entry-level Nikon D3200 sports a 24.2-megapixel sensor, almost double the total pixel count of the D3100, and EXPEED 3 processing allows the Nikon D3200 to record up to 4 fps at full resolution. The D3200 also includes compatibility with Nikon's new WU-1 wireless mobile adapter, which allows easy image sharing and even camera remote control via an Android phone via a free downloadable app (an iOS app is expected in late Fall 2012). Other major upgrades include a new 3-inch 921K-dot LCD monitor,...

The Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO updates an existing (and now discontinued) 150mm macro, redesigning its array of lens elements and adding optical stabilization to the mix. As Sigma excels in doing, the lens plugs a hole in other manufacturers' lineups, offering a medium telephoto macro solution with integrated optical stabilization. You want to archive your photo collection, right? You want an onsite copy and an offsite copy, right? You know, so one disaster doesn't lead to another.

But why should you buy a bunch of external hard drives that will just sit around on a shelf?

Why not save a few bucks and just buy the bare drives and one dock like the WiebeTech UltraDock that you can plug them into when you need to see what's on them? Wouldn't that make a lot more sense?

Read our review for the answers.

There's much shared between the flagship Samsung NX20, and its two siblings, the mid-range Samsung NX210 and entry-level Samsung NX1000. All three also share DNA with the existing NX200. Nikon has today announced its latest consumer digital SLR, the Nikon D3200. As the name would suggest, it's a followup to the D3100, which launched back in late 2010. The new model boosts resolution significantly, but simultaneously brings a step forward in terms of speed.

The D3200's new DX-format image sensor has a resolution of 24.2 megapixels. That's almost double the total pixel count of the D3100, equating to an increase of around 30% in the sensor's linear resolution. Despite the increase in pixel density, Nikon has simultaneously brought ISO 6,400 inside the standard sensitivity...

Quality prime lenses and a tack-sharp sensor come together with a unique hybrid optical viewfinder to form the Fujfilm X-Pro1, a digital camera built exclusively for enthusiast photographers. The X-Pro1 really hits the nail on the head, driving deep into high-ISO territory with tack-sharp images. Its controls and feature set are also ideal for the target market, and its available lenses are reasonably priced, small, well-made, and light weight. We found it to be a terrific photographic tool, easy to control, and a joy to use. Click here for our review of the Fujfilm X-Pro1, or just take our...

Sigma's new 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM macro lens is a redesign of an older design, with a few extra features. HSM focusing replaces an older (and slightly confusing) focusing system, and optical stabilization has been added in case you didn't want to lug a tripod into the field. We've put this lens through its paces in our test lab - click here to see our full review of this lens.

Canon USA today made quite a range of announcements revolving around the National Association of Broadcasters tradeshow, which is about to kick off next week in Las Vegas. The list includes a new video-oriented EOS-series professional DSLR and a Cinema EOS-series video camera, both with 4K resolution. There are also four new EF Cinema zoom lenses, a 30-inch 4K industrial display, and new firmware for XF-series camcorders.

First on the list--and likely the most interesting for Imaging Resource readers--is the Canon EOS-1D C, an 18-megapixel digital SLR that shares the same body and most of...

As a digital camera made expressly for enthusiasts, the Panasonic GX1 is a little larger than the smallest compact system cameras, but is still small enough to bring along easily. While the GX1 is in some ways a return to an older design, it still includes improvements in resolution and image quality. Its new touchscreen interface also manages to add a bit of utility as well; and an expanding list of compatible lenses make the Panasonic GX1 an appealing digital camera. Click here for more on the Panasonic GX1!

Panasonic has today announced the Lumix DMC-GF5 compact system camera, a new model that revisits the design of its earlier GF3 model, and makes refinements in a number of areas.

Sensor resolution is unchanged at twelve megapixels, but the GF5's imager has lower-profile, better-positioned circuitry that should contribute to improved noise performance. The new image processor also plays a part, adding a Multi-stage Noise Reduction function. The GF5's performance also receives a modest improvement both for the...

If you've been holding your breath waiting for an app that does photo ebooks on the iPad, you can now exhale. 58 North has just released Pholium, with which you can create and publish your own photos in an ebook.

We gave it a try yesterday and had a ball. It's elegant interface makes it easy to use and gets out of the way so you can play with the images you place on the pages of your ebook.

So it didn't take us long to put together a book of about 20 surfing images and publish it to a few of our more aquatic friends.

Pholium won't make you rich or famous, though. To see why, read our...
