    Large aperture,compact, cheap
    none

Very cheap lens, with good optical quality.

Lightweight, very large aperture, one of my favourite lens.

I use this lens whit film and digital bodies and the ony drawback is a little bit soft(and lowered contrast) wide open, but good from 2.8 to 4, and very sharp from 4 to 16, then diffraction may degrade the image.

very good for portrait with digital bodies.

  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro

7 out of 10 points and recommended
    large aperture, cheap
    soft wide open

i bought this lens(nikon mount) used and it works very well.

On digital bodies the focal range is very interesting, and whit 3 zoom lens(12-24, 24-70,70-200) you can have everything you need.

Mine is a little soft wide open(but still usable) with increasing sharpness stopped down.

Anyway, colors are better with nikon lenses.

  • Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro

6 out of 10 points and recommended
    good walk around lens
    not very sharp

when i want a lightweight all-around lens i use this.

Mine works fine(not very sharp and contrasty, but still usable) from the wide end untill 200mm, then sharpness decline and it's very hard to use.

I use it only with digital bodies because on full format borders are very soft.

  • Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED DX AF-S Nikkor

6 out of 10 points and recommended
optical qualiti stopped down, zoom range
    built quality

Very cheap lens with good optical quality.

Wide open this lens isn't a stellar performer but in good light situations(or high iso settings) is very sharp.
    Color rendition is good.
Some CA at the wide end.

  • Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Nikkor

8 out of 10 points and recommended
    2.8 costant, colors, sharp
    expensive

    Very good lens.

Built like a thank, heavy(maybe too much)

Sharp at all apertures, increasing stopping down untill f8.

Little amount of vignetting wide open(still usable).

    CA very well controlled.

  • Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX DG Aspherical

7 out of 10 points and recommended
Wide angle on aps sensor, sharp
    Flare and ghoting, distortion

This lens works fine on a digital body.

Sharpness is overall good, but is better to stop down a little(at least 1 stop).

Distortion is visible in most situations, but easy correctable with software.

The major drawback is flare and ghosting with evrery light source.

Ok it's a cheap lens. You get what you pay for.

    Built quality is very bad.

A lot of problems with flare and ghosting, CA on a high level, barrel distortion at the wide end, light falloff wide open (untill f11), sharp only stopped down 2 stop.
