Nikon 105mm f/2.8D AF Micro Nikkor
7 out of 10 points and recommendedSolid build, recessed element, speed/size/focal length comboSlow and chunky AFSlow and chunky AF date this lens a little compared to the excellent AF-S products, but it is a fabulous lens anyway. Compact, solid and really sharp.

Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S Nikkor
9 out of 10 points and recommendedworkhorse lens - very versatileHeavy, but I knew that when I bought it! Rubbish lens hood. You can't kill this. I paid for pro-quality stuff so I could abuse it. From the Sahara to the summit of Aconcagua this hasn't missed a beat. Wicked fast AF. Clear and sharp. Fast. Shit lens hood, though. Mine has been duct-taped in place for 8 years.

Nikon 400mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S VR Nikkor
10 out of 10 points and recommendedSharp as a pin. Much better than 12Mp DX format in my D300. Fast. Battleship build.None. Big, though. Heavy, but look what you're getting.Blown away by this. The image quality is ridiculously good. It resolves to a pixel on my D300. AF is perfect (but that is also camera-related) and ludicrous-speed fast. NO CA evident anywhere. Close to perfect. Fast. f2.8 gives great options with DOF. Muscle-men can hand-hold until they fatigue, but it is just fabulous with a monopod or even better with tripod and unlocked ball-head. VR is legend.

What this puppy will let you do with a (future) D4 is beyond imagining.
