  • Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS

    light, easy to use, price
    no hood included, small aperture

This is my second IS lens from Canon (first being the EF-S 17-85 IS). Construction seems a bit too light compared to the 17-85, but the picture quality does not suffer from my experience. Used this lens to photograph my nephew's wedding recently and the pics turned out great, although the depth of field suffered due to the aperture limits. Otherwise, a recommended lens for the beginner to intermediate amateur DSLR user!

    Cheap, light, simple, slow, aperture

I've been using SLR's since the late 80's (started with tho good ol' Petax K1000 with a 50mm, 70-300, and 500). This is possibly the cheapest lens, price and quality, I have ever used. If it hadn't been included in my kit I would not have spent the money on it. Too slow and limited aperture. With a good, solid tripod you can work some great pics, but otherwise, expect soft and/or poor focus, esp. at the long range...

  • Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

8 out of 10 points and recommended
Compact, IS, price, overall quality, fast AF
    Aperturem, construction

Great travelling lens. Compact size and good focal range for road trips. The picture quality was surprising, and the AF performance was good. If a family member hadn't dropped this (attached to my XT) in a bucket of koolaid, I'd still be using it. Not sealed as well as other lenses I have had. But I would buy again.

    CHEAP,

For a basic kit lens this leaves a lot to be desired. Used it for a week before tuning to my 17-85.
