  • Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF DX AF-S Nikkor

7 out of 10 points and recommended
    small, cheap, mostly sharp
variable aperture, occasionally hunts for a focus in low light

I used this lens during my short trip in Romania. It managed very well for a lens in this price category. It's only weakness was in lowlight performance. It failed to focus properly in some difficult indoor situations.

  • Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

6 out of 10 points and recommended
    IS, low price and weight
cheap plastic construction and mount, rotating front element

I used this lens during my trip to Vietnam and Cambodia this year. Not so bad lens for a price. I loved IS performance and was satisfied by image quality in most situations. Build quality is a weak point. Manual focus ring is almost useless, overal construction is loose and weak, rotating front element is annoying.

  • Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM

9 out of 10 points and recommended
    fast, sharp, great bokeh
    big&heavy, 77mm filter size

Realy great portrait lens for a crop sensor. My copy is sharp over all frame even wide open; fast and true autofocus operation; good color and creamy "impressionist" bokeh. Ah! Just wish it to be not so bulky and heavy!
