Samsung has today announced its new SL600 and SL50 digital cameras - a duo of closely related entry-level models.

The Samsung SL600 is based around a 12.2 megapixel CCD image sensor, while the Samsung SL50 sports a slightly lower-res 10.2 megapixel CCD. Both cameras couple their choice of sensor with a Samsung-branded 5x optical zoom lens that offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a useful 27mm wide angle to a moderate 135mm telephoto.

The other main difference between Samsung's SL600 and SL50 can be found on their rear panels. The Samsung SL600 offers up a 2.7" LCD display, while the Samsung SL50 opts for a slightly lower-cost 2.5" LCD panel. Neither model offers optical image stabilization, but both offer a range of Samsung's automatic controls including Smart Auto scene recognition and Perfect Portrait functions (the latter of which comprises face detection, smile shot, blink detection, red-eye fix, and beauty shot).

Pricing has not been disclosed for either camera at the current time. Availability is set for Spring 2010 for both models. For more details, read our Samsung SL600 preview and Samsung SL50 preview.

Original Source Press Release:

Samsung Adds Versatility And Style To New SL-series Cameras

The New SL600 and SL50 Offer Enhanced Feature Sets, Powerful Optics and Stylish Design

Las Vegas, NV (January 6, 2010) – Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, today extended its popular SL-Series of digital cameras with the introduction of the SL600 and SL50. These two stylish, easy-to-use compact digital cameras offer consumers an impressive range of advanced features all at an affordable price. The SL600 and SL50 will be on display during the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show, January 7-10, 2010, in the Samsung booth #11026 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“Samsung’s SL-Series of digital cameras deliver significant value to the consumer, and that’s especially true with the new SL600 and SL50,” said Mr. SJ Park, CEO of Samsung Digital Imaging Company. “In addition to their attractive designs, these cameras give casual photographers the ability to do more with features that are typically not found in entry-level digital cameras, including wide-angle lenses, longer zooms and automatic functionalities such as Samsung’s Smart Auto scene recognition technology.”

With the 12.2 mega-pixel SL600 and 10.2 mega-pixels SL50, casual photographers will be able to enjoy the benefits of more powerful lenses, allowing them to enhance their creativity. Both new SL-Series cameras feature a high-quality 27mm wide-angle Samsung lens with 5x optical zoom, delivering significant flexibility when compared to a traditional 3x optical zoom, 35mm lens. The Samsung SL600 and SL50 also feature Samsung’s advanced Digital Image Stabilization technology, which helps reduce blur and makes it easy for novice photographers to capture impressive images. In addition, the SL-Series cameras offer large LCD screens on the back of the cameras to help frame one’s shot and review images. The SL600 offers users a 2.7-inch 230K LCD, while the SL50 offers a 2.5-inch 230K LCD. Both the SL600 and SL50 even come equipped with standard definition video recording (640x480) at 30 frames per second, enabling consumers to capture important moments.

Smart Automatic Controls
The new SL-Series cameras offer a full suite of automatic controls, including Samsung’s advanced scene recognition technology known as Smart Auto. Designed to simplify the way consumers take a photograph, Smart Auto ensures that users never have to worry about their photos being washed out, too dark or out of focus. Smart Auto analyzes key elements of the composition of the image such as color, brightness, motion, and subject and then selects the appropriate scene mode which will produce the best results possible.

In addition to Smart Auto, the SL600 and SL50 also feature Samsung’s Perfect Portrait System – a series of automatic technologies which take the guess work out of shooting beautiful portraits. Key features of the Perfect Portrait System include face detection and Samsung’s Smile Shot and Blink Detection technologies which automatically detect when your subjects are smiling and if their eyes are closed, allowing you to capture them looking their best. Another advanced feature is the Red-eye Fix mode. This in-camera feature automatically fixes the typical red-eye associated with the use of the flash, before the photo is produced, a significant time saver as you don’t have to spend time afterwards removing red-eyes from your pictures. The Perfect Portrait System also includes Samsung’s Beauty Shot, a unique technology which allows consumers to remove all the imperfections on a subject’s face such as wrinkles, blemishes, and moles. Simply select one of three editing options to even out skin tone and complexion.
