Kodak's EasyShare Sport digital camera. Rendering provided by Eastman Kodak Co. Kodak: New cameras, frame, printer

(Tuesday, January 4, 2011 - 00:01 EST)

Eastman Kodak Co. has today announced a variety of new imaging products for the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, which is about to get under way in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Kodak's announcements include three new digital cameras, two video cameras, a digital frame, an inkjet printer, and several new service offerings. Details on the hardware announcements are unfortunately rather brief, but we do know a few basic details on the main products. The entry-level point in Kodak's new digital camera offerings is occupied by the EasyShare Sport C123, priced at around US$80. The Kodak Sport is said to be the company's first waterproof still camera, able to withstand use at depths up to ten feet. It's also considered to be dust, dirt, and sand-proof. The Kodak EasyShare Sport has a resolution of twelve megapixels, and a 2.4-inch LCD display. The press release doesn't mention the lens, but it's Kodak-branded, and looks likely to have a fixed focal length. Beyond this, the only other details we're aware of for the Kodak C123 are that it includes Kodak Smart Capture technology, and offers a variety of scene and color modes.

Next up, the Kodak EasyShare Mini is priced at around US$100, and is said to be around the same size as a credit card -- at least, in terms of width and height. (It's obviously quite a bit thicker.) Kodak describes the EasyShare Mini as its smallest camera to date, and it includes a mirror on the front panel that helps users in shooting self portraits. The Kodak Mini has a resolution of ten megapixels, and couples this to a 3x optical zoom lens. There's no optical viewfinder, with the camera instead relying solely on a 2.5-inch LCD display. As well as Kodak's Smart Capture technology, and a variety of scene and color modes, the Kodak Mini also includes face recognition capabilities.

Top of the line among the new camera announcements is the Kodak EasyShare Touch M577, priced at about US$150. This model has the best lens of the trio, being a Schneider-Kreuznach branded 5x optical zoom, offering 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from 28 to 140mm -- a useful wide angle to a moderate telephoto. The Kodak Touch M577 has a resolution of 14 megapixels, and is capable of recording 720p high definition video with an unspecified frame rate. There's a dedicated button for video recording, and an HDMI connector to help view images and videos on a high-def display. The rear-panel three inch LCD panel includes a capacitive touch screen overlay, allowing the display to serve double duty as an input device. Like the Kodak Mini, the Touch M577 includes Smart Capture, face recognition, scene mode, and artistic mode functions.

The video cameras are the Kodak Playfull and Playsport, priced at around US$150 and $180 respectively. Both models can capture 1080p high-def video at unspecified frame rate, and five megapixel stills. The Playsport adds ten foot waterproofing, as well as dirt / dust / sand proofing, both absent from the Playfull. A new Kodak Pulse digital frame is available in seven inch ($130) and ten inch ($200) sizes, and now allows quick commenting on photos that were emailed to the frame, connection to Facebook and Kodak Gallery albums, and playlist creation. The Kodak ESP C310 all-in-one printer ($100) has a new ink system with pigmented inks, and no other info is available on the device. Finally, there's a new 3D photo printing service, a new Smart Fit photo book service for Kodak Gallery, and a new PYNK Smart Print System for the Kodak Picture Kiosk that automatically crops images to fit a specific frame size.

Information on availability for all these products wasn't available at press time.
