First-looks posted last February are now updated with production-level opinions...

Our friend Steve Sanders of Steve's Digicams fame has now updated his first-look reviews of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P31 and DSC-P51 digital cameras posted last February to final review status. For the 'P31, Steve concludes:
"The DSC-P31 is a good choice for anyone that wants a camera that can be easily carried in their pocket or purse and wants to just point-N-shoot. The DSC-P31's performance is fairly impressive. It may be small in size but there's nothing small about the 1600x1200 pictures that it creates. The indoor pictures of people with flash do very well and print nicely. The P31 is accurate even in low light conditions. The overall image quality, sharpness and color balance is on the same level as cameras with its physical size with larger resolution capabilities. We feel the Sony CyberShot DSC-P31 will make a great camera for those going on vacation, just be sure to purchase a larger Memory Stick and a second set of batteries."
For the optical zoom-equipped DSC-P51 meanwhile, Steve adds:
"The DSC-P51's performance is fairly impressive. The full size camera yields full sized 1600x1200 pictures that make good 8x10's. An optical zoom is a useful feature but it does take you over that magic $200 price point of the DSC-P31. and moves you to the approx. $280 price point of this camera (as of 05/2002)."
For more, read both reviews - then as usual you can get further thoughts from our own reviews. We've got a first-look review of the Cyber-shot DSC-P31, and another of the DSC-P51 (although note that the 'P51 review doesn't have samples yet, as Sony asked us not to show any from our early pre-production camera). You'll also find a review on one other site too - Jeff Keller from the Digital Camera Resource Page has a DSC-P31 first-look that you should read if you're interested in that model...
