Nikon literally needs no introduction at the high end of both the film and digital photography market, but they've not thus far been a major player at the low end of digital. Still, their Coolpix 775 model was one of the most popular of last year's holiday season, and they're clearly eyeing the low end of the market where the real mass quantities of consumers reside.

Their latest effort in this area is the Nikon Coolpix 2000, a model clearly aimed at a low price point, yet still sporting some of the hallmark Nikon features such as excellent macro capability and the unique Best Shot Selector function for sharp handheld shots in low lighting.

I'm afraid I wasn't too crazy about the all-plastic design of the 2000's body, but recognize the need for such cost-cutting measures to achieve affordable price points. This is just a "First Look" review, based on a prototype, hence no sample photos, but the few shots I snapped for my own viewing looked very promising.

Read the review for the details, and stay tuned for an update once I get my hands on a production model!
