Fuji Photo Film U.S.A Inc. has today announced that it has found an intermittent electronic malfunction in a small number of FinePix S2 Pro digital cameras which could render them inoperable.

A page on Fuji's website lists the serial numbers of every camera potentially affected. Courtesy of Fuji, the serial numbers can be found below; they're listed in sequences, but there are gaps between each sequence, so unless your specific serial number is noted your camera is not affected. There are just a hair under 1250 serial numbers listed in total.

Fuji UK's website suggests in its announcement that the problem is caused by a missing resistor that is designed to absorb power spikes; without this a spike when the batteries are inserted or removed can damage the camera. Affected cameras may fail with an "Err" message on the top display panel and LCD monitor when the AA or Lithium batteries are replaced, at which point the camera will be inoperable. Fuji says that "the chance for a camera to fail while in use is very remote". If you are in the USA and your camera suffers this malfunction, or if you have one of the cameras in the serial ranges below, you are advised to send an email to [email protected] or call 1-800-659-3854 and select option #1, to receive instructions on receiving free evaluation and service. UK customers with cameras in these serial ranges should contact 01234 218388 to ascertain whether their camera requires assessment and repair. UK residents who purchased their cameras outside the UK are also advised and have them carry out an assessment on their camera.

Fuji Canada are only listing two serial numbers on their website as affected; 24A01010 and 24A00963. If you own one of these Canadian cameras, you should ship it via collect courier to:

(ELMSFORD, NY, December 9, 2002) -- Fuji Photo Film U.S.A, Inc., announced that certain FinePix S2 Pro cameras with specific serial numbers may be subject to an intermittent electronic malfunction that could render the camera inoperable. "Err" messages will appear on the top display panel and LCD monitor of the camera when the AA or lithium batteries are replaced, and the camera will not operate.

Fujifilm noted that the chance for a camera to fail while in use is very remote.

Fujifilm is notifying its dealers of the steps the company is taking to address customer inquiries related to this subject. The company is asking FinePix S2 Pro owners to visit its corporate Web site to determine if their camera may be affected. Important information for recent S2 Pro purchasers

Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro: possible power supply adjustment required for cameras purchased after 20 October 2002

Fuji Photo Film (UK) Ltd today announced that a small number of FinePix S2 Pro digital cameras recently sold in the UK may be subject to a possible power supply 'lock-up' that could render the camera inoperable. The number of affected products sold to UK customers is estimated to be roughly 20 (twenty) and the serial numbers of those cameras are within those listed below.

Fujifilm's UK Technical Department has already made the required adjustments to the vast majority of unsold cameras in question. However, the company advises that a limited number of cameras have been released to the UK market and may already have been purchased.

UK customers who purchased a FinePix S2 Pro with any of the following serial numbers after 20 October 2002 should contact 01234 218388 to ascertain whether their camera requires assessment and repair:

Between serial numbers 24L00441 and 24L00680

Between serial numbers 24L01057 and 24L01256

Between serial numbers 24L01553 and 24L01863

Between serial numbers 24L10257 and 24L10608

In addition, Fujifilm will be pleased to carry out an assessment on any cameras purchased outside the UK, providing that the user is resident in the UK.

Explanation of power supply 'lock-up'

During the manufacture of the camera body of the FinePix S2 Pro, a resistor is added to the power supply circuit in order to suppress possible voltage spikes in battery supply. Without this resistor, it is possible that the camera may 'lock up' and become inoperable.

The chance for a camera to fail while in use is very remote, and may not happen in the camera's lifetime. However, Fujifilm would like to ensure complete customer satisfaction with its products, and is therefore offering a no-charge precautionary evaluation and service of any FinePix S2 Pro camera that could be affected by this condition.
