Ricoh to exit film business, focus on digital

A news article from Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper picked up by the Associated Press predicts that Ricoh Co. Ltd. will exit the film camera business within the next twelve months.

The company has apparently already ceased development of film cameras, and will only offer digital camera models by March 2004. Ricoh's share of the film camera market in Japan is less than 1%, and with users switching to digital, the company's film camera business is now operating at a loss. Ricoh's total camera sales totalled ¥10 billion over the last fiscal year, and account for less than 6% of its total sales.
