LAKE SUCCESS, N. Y., June 27, 2003 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ), today announced that its smallest and lightest Digital ELPH® camera thus far - the new PowerShot® SD100 as well as the company's latest Pictbridge™ direct printing technology- compatible CP-200 and CP-300 Card Photo Printers will be available this summer for suggested retail pricing of $499, $279 and $379, respectively.

PowerShot SD100 Digital ELPH Camera Records Life On-the-Go
The PowerShot SD100 is the first Canon digital camera to exclusively record all images to a Secure Digital (SD) Memory card. Featuring a 3.2 megapixel CCD, the camera provides consumers with high-quality images for making prints up to 8.5 x 11-inches.

With its ultra-compact size and new white-platinum finish crafted in stainless steel, the PowerShot SD100 digital camera represents the ultimate in portability, durability and elegance. The size of the PowerShot SD100 digital camera was made possible through the process of miniaturization, beginning with a new optical zoom lens design so small it can literally hide under a U.S. dime, to the extremely small built-in flash unit, a new condensed battery and use of the SD media format.

The PowerShot SD100 Digital ELPH camera is approximately 15 percent smaller in volume and eight percent lighter than the current PowerShot S230 Digital ELPH camera. The new SD100 camera offers the same high quality features and functions as the PowerShot S230 camera. These features include its ability to capture up to three minutes of video at resolutions up to 640 x 480 pixels and a 9-point AiAF autofocus system, which makes focusing quick and easy, even with off-center subjects.

Canon's new PowerShot SD100 Digital ELPH camera features the world's smallest retractable 2X optical zoom lens. When retracted, the f2.8 - f3.9 lens measures a mere 17.9mm in length, almost the same as the diameter of a U.S. dime and approximately 20% shorter than 2X zoom lenses used in previous Digital ELPH cameras. As pixel counts go up and lens sizes come down, lens quality becomes the crucial element to image quality. Canon's expertise in advanced optical and glass-molding technologies allows aspherical lenses to be incorporated in the zoom, delivering small size and image sharpness not possible with conventional lenses. A 3.2X digital zoom is combined with the 2X lens to achieve a powerful maximum 6.4X combined zoom.

Canon developed the proprietary DIGIC (Digital Imaging Integrated Circuit) image processor specifically for use with its line of digital cameras, including the SD100 camera. The technology combines the jobs of image processing and camera function control into one chip. Because it was specifically designed for use in digital cameras, it is also capable of handling JPEG compression/expansion; memory card control; LCD/Video control and processing; gain control (control of CCD signal amplification); Auto Exposure; Auto Focus; Auto White Balance control and most other functions of the camera. The result is a product that offers faster and more powerful auto focus than ever before, faster image processing, longer battery life, and the ability to record three-minute movie clips with sound.

DIGIC's high-speed processing enables Canon's exclusive iSAPS (an acronym for Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology that improves picture quality by "predicting" certain camera settings like focusing distance, exposure and optimum white balance based on zoom focal length, overall light level and tonal distribution data. With iSAPS, the PowerShot SD100 Digital ELPH camera can analyze a scene just before the image is made and in doing so, increase the speed and precision of the camera's autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balance. The result is high-quality images and fast response to help capture the "decisive moment."

The camera comes bundled with a USB cable, an A/V cable and an SD memory card (16MB). The software included is Canon's ZoomBrowser EX (Windows), ImageBrowser (Mac), PhotoRecord, PhotoStitch and RemoteCapture software. For more advanced photo and video manipulation, Arcsoft PhotoImpression and VideoImpression are included. As the camera is PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) compatible, no additional drivers are needed to transfer images to Windows XP or Mac OS X (v10.1/v10.2) environments.

Underwater Housing Certified to 130 Feet

Canon is adding a new optional underwater housing for the PowerShot SD100 that has been tested at depths up to 130 feet. The new housing is equipped with a flash diffusion plate for softer, more evenly illuminated light and the front lens glass is constructed in two separate layers to prevent fogging when submerged under water.

CP-200 and CP-300 Card Photo Printers Let Digital Camera Owners Print Direct

Canon's two new dye-sublimation printers are approximately 40 percent smaller and 13 percent lighter than current models in the line. The Canon Card Photo Printer CP-200 / CP-300 dye-sub printers allow users to create extremely high quality color prints directly via USB cable from any current model PowerShot camera in about 85 seconds. The CP-200 and CP-300 are also Pictbridge technology-compatible. Pictbridge technology is a new worldwide direct printing standard that allows any Pictbridge technology-compatible printer to print directly from any Pictbridge-technology compatible digital camera.

Consumers can make different sized bordered or borderless prints, ranging from miniature stickers and wallet-sized prints to 4x6-inch photo postcards. While the CP-200 printer requires AC power, the CP-300 can run with AC or battery power. The CP-300 printer kit includes a rechargeable battery pack. With their compact size, the units can create beautiful color prints quickly and easily from wherever the photographs themselves are taken.

The combination of the PowerShot SD100 camera and a CP-200 or CP-300 printer takes the entire photographic process and puts it in a consumerÔ€™s briefcase or the new optional Canon CPB-100 Printer Carrying Bag. Both printers are compatible with DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) to facilitate batch printing, e-mail transfers, and print ordering through online photo labs.
