Sanyo Japan has announced a new 3.3 megapixel model for its Xacti (pronounced Zack-Tee) line of digital cameras.

The DSC-S1 couples its effective 3.2 megapixel rating with a 3x optical zoom lens, 5-area AF, 1.6" LCD display, optical viewfinder, built-in flash, SD / MMC storage and USB connectivity. Power comes from 2 AA or 1 CR-V3 battery, with alkaline disposables coming in the camera bundle. Sanyo remains one of the few digital camera manufacturers whose cameras feature interpolation, allowing this camera's spec sheet to list a rather misleading maximum image size of 2880 x 2160 pixels. The actual sensor resolution is 2048 x 1536 pixels.

The Sanyo Xacti DSC-S1 comes only in a silver body color (a choice of colors is quite common in Japan). Pricing is set at ¥40,000 (equivalent to US$340 / CAD$478 / €311 / £215 ignoring exchange rate fluctuations, taxes and duties). The camera will go on sale in Japan from September 19th, with a monthly production of 30,000 units.
