PRESS RELEASE: Sony Accelerates Standard Memory Stick Media With Faster Speed and New Color

USB Reader/Writer with Triple Memory-Card Slots Adds Versatility

LAS VEGAS (PMA, Booth M30), Feb. 11, 2004 - Sony Electronics is equipping Memory Stick® media users for the digital future by adding the ability to read data at high speeds and copyright protection as standard features on all Memory Stick media available at retailers nationwide.

Updated Memory Stick media will start shipping this spring in 32MB, 64MB, 128MB and 256MB (total 128MBx2) capacities. A striking cobalt-blue color will distinguish the new line from its purple predecessor.

When used with compatible (4-pin parallel), high-speed Memory Stick media-enabled hardware, users can enjoy read speeds that are up to four times faster than current standard Memory Stick media. The new media will allow users to speed up viewing their digital images on a compatible camera and streaming video storage. Sony expects device compatibility to remain constant or even increase, given that the media will be interoperable with both serial and parallel interfaces.

MagicGate™ copyright protection technology is also being incorporated across the new media family to allow for secure distribution of commercial content, such as digital music.

Pricing for Sony's new Memory Stick media will be about $30 for 32MB, $40 for 64MB, $60 for 128MB, and $100 for 256MB and available in the spring.

One USB Device for Three Types of Media Cards
On top of its new line of Memory Stick media, Sony is taking the wraps off of a versatile three-in-one USB reader/writer. The new MSAC-USM1 USB reader/writer will feature slots that accept standard-size Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO™ media, the smaller Memory Stick Duo™ and Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media, as well as MicroDrive CompactFlash® (Type I/II) cards. It will accommodate the petite Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo media without the use of an adaptor.

Along with the flexibility for transferring files among digital devices, the MSAC-USM1 reader/writer will also allow users to transfer content from one media card to another without first saving to a PC. The reader/writer will work with USB 2.0 and parallel interfaces to achieve high-speed data transfers when used with compatible hardware devices. The MSAC-USM1 reader/writer will be available in fall for a suggested price of $30.

Reflecting on Five Years of Success for the Memory Stick Platform
Since its introduction in fall 1998, the Memory Stick format has continued to grow and expand into new and unique markets. Sony reports that worldwide cumulative shipments of Memory Stick media have reached 60 million units, while more than 50 million Memory Stick-enabled products have shipped to date.
