Well, the 8-megapixel derby continues, with Nikon's Coolpix 8700 being the latest model I've tested.

Besides the 8 megapixel CCD, the 8700 sports a sharp 8x zoom lens built with ED glass, and the full (!) range of features we've come to expect from Nikon. Given the reputation of the Coolpix series, the 8700 has a lot to live up to, but fortunately it seemed well up to the challenge. Resolution and color are both excellent, and the camera has a *very* responsive shutter as well.

Not to say though, that Nikon's engineers entirely avoided the tradeoffs that are part and parcel of digicam design - Like any camera, the 8700 has both strengths and weaknesses. Read the full review for all the details.

Bottom line? An excellent camera, it made the cut to become a "Dave's Pick."
