(Wednesday, August 24, 2005 - 18:23 EDT)

Alongside all its camera and accessory announcements, Canon showed its strength in yet another field with a vast array of new printers unveiled.

Three new SELPHY compact photo printers printing 4" x 8", 4" x 6", or 2.1" x 3.4" prints are likely to give retail photofinishers a shock, with a per-print 4" x 6" price as low as 28 cents. The Canon SELPHY CP510 and CP710 300dpi dye-sub printers are $100 and $150 respectively. The lower-cost CP510 is designed for portability, with a retractable USB cable built in (for cameras with non-standard connectors, there is still a separate USB port as well). Stepping up to the CP710, you get a 1.5" color LCD display, and slots for CompactFlash, Secure Digital and Memory Stick cards. Finally, the SELPHY DS810 at $150 offers inkjet printing resolutions of up to 4800 x 1200 dpi instead of the dye-sublimation printing of the other models, and boosts the LCD display size to 2.5".

Next up from Canon are five new PIXMA photo printers, the Canon PIXMA iP5200R, iP5200, iP6600D, iP6220D and iP6210D. All five use the new ChromaLife100 system, which Canon says has ten-year gas-fastness in open air, and 30 year light-fastness displayed under glass. New FINE-branded inkjet print heads with 6,144 nozzles allow the printers to offer speed, and droplet sizes of either one or two picoliters, depending upon the model. A new ink tank system combines an LED into the ink tanks, which lights up when a cartridge is inserted correctly. If the cartridge isn't pushed in completely, the LED doesn't light, and if it is in the wrong slot or the cartridge is running out of ink, the LED blinks.

The iP5200 and iP5200R are identical with the exception of the latter's Ethernet and Wireless 802.11b/g network connectivity, and offer 9600 x 2400dpi six-color printing with a 1 picoliter droplet size, as well as automatic duplex printing (the ability to print on both sides of a sheet of paper). Pricing is set at $179.99 for the iP5200, and $229.99 for the iP5200R.

The iP6210D and iP6220D are likewise closely related, with 4800 x 1200 dpi six-color printing, a two picoliter droplet size, but with lower pricetags of $99.99 and $149.99 respectively. Where they differ is in the iP6220D's 2.5" LCD display, and card slots (CompactFlash / SmartMedia / Secure Digital / Memory Stick without adapters, plus MiniSD, xD-PictureCard and Memory Stick Duo with the use of an adapter).

CANON'S NEW SELPHY COMPACT PHOTO PRINTERS PROVIDE EASY-TO-USE, HIGH QUALITY PHOTO PRINTING SOLUTIONS AT AFFORDABLE PRICE POINTS

New 4 x 6 Inch Compact Photo Printers Feature High Quality Images, Easy-to-Use Designs and Estimated Selling Prices That Start below $100 and Include 28 Cents Per-Print Costs On Select Models

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., Aug. 22, 2005 – Whether printing photos of baby’s first birthday for family members to take as parting gifts or the game winning goal for the referee, Canon’s new line of 4 x 6 inch photo printers offer a wide range of solutions that suit most consumers printing needs. For complete photo solutions on the go, Canon today added two new portable Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP510 and CP710 models to the line. Focused on consumers that want to print great photos at home with no computer required, Canon today introduced the new SELPHY DS810 dedicated home photo printer.

As a global brand, SELPHY represents Canon’s 4 x 6 photo printer line, including dye sublimation and inkjet technology-based offerings. The word SELPHY represents self-photography. This branding initiative is a part of Canon’s efforts to encourage consumers to experience and enjoy photography. SELPHY Compact Photo Printers change how consumers experience photography. By providing them with their own personal photo lab, consumers can print photos moments after an image is captured.

“Consumers today want a complete digital imaging solution. They want to take photos and print them out wherever they are – and they do not want to pay a lot of money for the experience,” said Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc, a subsidiary of Canon Inc. “With our expanded 4 x 6 inch photo printer line up, we provide consumers with photo printing solutions that fit their lifestyles and their budgets.”

Completely Portable – SELPHY CP510 and SELPHY CP710
For the first time, Canon is offering consumers a portable photo printing solution at an entry-level price. As the first dye-sublimation printer on the market for under $100, the SELPHY CP510 model will carry an estimated selling price of $99.99 . Canon’s new Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP510 model is compact and lightweight enough to fit into a tote bag and offers consumers high image quality, portability and ease-of-use at an affordable price point. Featuring a retractable, built-in USB cable, camera users don’t have to remember to carry cables around to create photos on the fly.

Stepping up, for an estimated selling price of $149.99 , Canon’s Compact Photo Printer SELPHY CP710 model lets consumers enjoy a 1.5 inch Color LCD screen with built-in image information displayed and memory card slots for CF, SD, MMC and Memory Stick formats . Both printers feature additional USB ports for connection to a PC or external USB cable.

Canon is now offering 108-sheet postcard-size paper and ink packs for $29.99 , which brings the cost of home photo printing down to 28 cents per print . These paper packs are compatible with all current and previous CP printers (except for the CP-10 model), such as the SELPHY CP600, CP710 and CP510 models.

Canon’s new SELPHY CP510 and CP710 Compact Photo Printer models make printing brilliant, high quality photos from a digital camera quick and easy. Replacing the SELPHY CP400 model, these two new printers allow consumers to make beautiful 4 x 6-inch borderless postcard prints in approximately 58 seconds, which is considerably faster than previous models.

Producing crisp, vibrant photographs, these two new printers can be operated with AC power or via an optional rechargeable battery for truly portable printing. The printers can be connected to a PictBridge-compliant digital camera or a compatible personal computer for quick, high-quality prints in seconds. Their small size and new streamlined design make these compact photo printers simple to tote along to parties and family gatherings. These new dye sublimation devices create water and fade resistant prints that last up to 100 years .

These two new printers can create high-quality 300 dpi bordered or borderless color photographs in three different paper sizes from a computer via USB or by direct camera-to-printer connection. These sizes include 4 x 8-inch personalized greeting cards or invitations; 4 x 6 inch postcard size or 2.1 x 3.4 inch credit card size pictures (The 4 x 8 inch and credit card size paper cassettes are optional accessories). The 4 x 8 inch wide paper size allows consumers to create and print personalized greeting cards for nearly any occasion. The printers come equipped with drivers and application software (templates available only on Windows – not Mac for 4 x 8 size but we supply drivers and software for both – need to clarify the templates for 4 x 8 size need to be through a computer and for Windows only). that includes a wide variety of templates and clip art for users to personalize their greetings, holiday cards, birth announcements, party invitations, and many other projects.

Additionally, select Canon PowerShot digital cameras feature Direct Print options that can be used with the SELPHY CP510 and CP710 models, including an ID Photo Print function that automatically generates passport style prints as well as Movie prints of various sizes (selectable on the camera-menu).

The SELPHY CP510 and CP710 Compact Photo Printers will be supplied with a 4 x 6 paper cassette, a five-sheet starter set of 4 x 6 inch paper and ink, an AC Adapter, a user manual and dedicated software for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. The CP710 model will be available in October, while the CP510 model is scheduled for availability in September.

SELPHY DS810 Compact Photo Printer Makes Home Photo Printing Easy
Digital cameras and mobile phones have changed the rules about taking photos. Smaller than a desktop model, Canon’s new inkjet-based SELPHY DS810 Compact Photo Printer allows consumers to print high quality photos from the comforts of home. Without the need to connect to a computer, consumers can set up their SELPHY DS810 model in virtually any room in the house.

The SELPHY DS810 Compact Photo Printer features Canon FINE (Full Photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology, which uses an innovative print head with nozzles that eject consistent, precise ink droplets as small as two picoliters. This patented technology produces an outstanding resolution of up to 4800 x 1200 dpi for exceptional detail and photorealism. The printer creates beautiful 4 x 6 inch photographs in about 63 seconds directly from a PictBridge enabled camera.

With the many methods of capturing and storing digital images, Canon’s new SELPHY DS810 Compact Photo Printer provides consumers with a wide range of printing options. Consumers can print their photos on the DS810 model from the printer’s memory card slots2, direct from a PictBridge enabled digital camera or DV camcorder, from a computer, direct from an infrared-enabled mobile phone , PCs or PDA, or wirelessly from a Bluetooth connection with an optional adaptor . Furthermore, the printer includes a 2.5 color LCD screen for easy editing, color correction and cropping to ensure that every picture looks that best prior to printing. The DS810 model offers consumers a wide range of 4 x 6 inch paper media choices, including semi-gloss, glossy, stickers (each sheet includes 16 stickers), and matte photo finishes. Canon is now offering Photo Paper Pro in the 4 x 8 inch size as well.

The new printer uses Canon’s new ChromaLife100 system. This system can produce prints on select genuine Canon photo papers that resist fading for up to 100 years when stored in an archival quality photo album . The 100-year-lifespan rivals that of many traditional film based photos, long considered by consumers to be the benchmark for image permanence.

Unlike some competitors that only test for ozone degradation, Canon has tested the ChromaLife100 system against three types of gases to simulate realistic conditions – ozone, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide. Prints produced on Canon Photo Paper Pro with the other elements of the ChromaLife100 system had an up to ten-year gas fastness10 when exposed to open air. ChromaLife100 prints, when created on Canon Photo Paper Pro or Photo Paper Plus Glossy, had up to 30-year light fastness10 when displayed under glass.

Canon’s new SELPHY DS810 Compact Photo Printer comes equipped with BCI-16CL ink tank, a power cord and document kit, which includes a Set-Up Software & User’s Guide CD-ROM, Quick Start Guide and Registration Card. The SELPHY DS810 model will be available in September for an estimated selling price of $149.99 .

Wireless Photo Printing
All three new SELPHY Printers are compatible with Canon’s new BU-20 Bluetooth Adaptor. Available as an optional accessory to the SELPHY and PIXMA Photo Printers, this petite Bluetooth adaptor allows consumers to print photos wirelessly from most Bluetooth enabled devices, like computers, mobile phones and PDAs. Firmware upgrade for the SELPHY CP510 and CP710 may be required. Please check www.powershot.com for more information. This optional accessory will be available in late September for an estimated selling price of $79.991.

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., Aug. 22, 2005 – Canon today added five new single function models to its PIXMA photo printer line. The new models now feature large LCD screens, sleek new compact designs and one printer offers built-in wireless capability. What the five new photo printers all have in common though is the continued Canon commitment to photo quality including such technological innovations as the new Canon ChromaLife100 System for long lasting photos and Canon’s pioneering Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) print head system for impressive speed and photo quality.

The latest Canon PIXMA models include the Canon PIXMA iP5200R Photo Printer, Canon PIXMA iP5200 Photo Printer, Canon PIXMA iP6600D Photo Printer, Canon PIXMA iP6220D Photo Printer and Canon PIXMA iP6210D Photo Printer.

“From Grandma to the grand kids, our new PIXMA photo printers give consumers with varying printing needs more choices, more features and a better value,” said Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. “In addition to options, we wanted to offer all our customers the same cutting edge technological advances Canon has pioneered including the new Canon ChromaLife100 system that can help to better preserve photos over time and the Canon FINE print head system which Canon launched in 1999. With the Canon FINE print head system, customers can get borderless photo lab quality prints amazingly quickly.”

The New ChromaLife100 System
All five new Canon PIXMA photo printers use the breakthrough new Canon ChromaLife100 system.

Prints produced on Canon Photo Paper Pro with the other elements of the ChromaLife100 system had an up to ten-year gas fastness when exposed to open air. ChromaLife100 prints, when created on Canon Photo Paper Pro or Photo Paper Plus Glossy, had up to 30-year light fastness when displayed under glass.

Advanced Print Head Technology – A Canon Innovation
Launched globally by Canon in 1999, the Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) advanced print head technology is one of the keys to the impressive speed and high photo quality in PIXMA Photo Printers. FINE technology uses a ground-breaking high-performance multi-nozzle print head with up to 6,144 nozzles that ejects consistent and microscopic ink droplets. The results are high-resolution photos with greater detail and clarity in less time.

“Canon, long a leader in ink jet printing, was the first manufacturer with a fully-integrated photolithographic ink jet print head, and the first to offer products with the many benefits that this print head technology provides,” said Charles LeCompte, president of Lyra Research, a market research firm.

New Ink Status System Lights the Way
On new PIXMA photo printers equipped with clear individual smart LED ink tanks, available on the new iP5200, iP5200R and iP6600 models, the Canon ink status detection system is used to alert customers to low ink levels and to help ensure that the ink tanks are installed and working correctly. Under the system, if the Canon ink tank is accidentally placed in the incorrect slot on the print head, a light on the individual tank will begin to flash. These smart LED individual ink tanks are the latest improvement on the Canon individual ink tank system which was first introduced in 1993.

If the customer does not fully seat the Canon ink tank in its slot, the light will not illuminate, indicating that it has not been correctly installed. If the Canon ink tank is running low, the light on the ink tank will begin to flash. When the ink runs out completely, it will flash at a higher rate.

Canon PIXMA iP5200R Printer
The Canon PIXMA iP5200R Photo Printer is a great wireless photo printer for home networking. It is both wireless (802.11b/g) and wired (Ethernet) network capable and can produce a borderless 4x6-inch photo with photo lab quality in approximately 36 seconds with the default setting in the printer driver .

Prints produced on Canon Photo Paper Pro with the other elements of the ChromaLife100 system had an up to ten-year gas fastness1 when exposed to open air. ChromaLife100 prints, when created on Canon Photo Paper Pro or Photo Paper Plus Glossy, had up to 30-yearlight fastness1 when displayed under glass.

Advanced Print Head Technology – A Canon Innovation
Launched globally by Canon in 1999, the Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) advanced print head technology is one of the keys to the impressive speed and high photo quality in PIXMA photo all-in-one printers. FINE uses a ground-breaking high-performance multi-nozzle print head with up to 6,144 nozzles that ejects consistent and microscopic ink droplets. The results are high-resolution photos with greater detail and clarity in less time.

“Canon, long a leader in inkjet printing, was the first manufacturer with a fully-integrated photolithographic inkjet print head, and the first to offer products with the many benefits that this print head technology provides,” said Charles LeCompte, president of Lyra Research, a market research firm.

  1. Results based on accelerated testing by Canon under controlled temperature, humidity, and gas conditions. For the 100-year figure, Canon simulated storage in an album with plastic sleeves. For the 30-year lightfastness figure, Canon simulated display of a photo in a glass frame in an indoor location without direct sunlight or other high intensity light. The 10-year gasfastness figure is based on a testing ratio of gases typical to indoor air composition (O3: NOx:SOx--3:19:1) with 100 times concentration in order to accelerate color fading. Canon cannot guarantee the longevity of prints; results may vary depending on printed image, drying time, display/storage conditions and environmental factors.
