An Apple TV software update puts H.264-encoded YouTube video on your HDTV.

Apple today released a free software update adding YouTube video to Apple TV, its $299 OS X box that can display your iTunes content and high resolution digital photos on an HDTV.

The roughly five-minute download adds a YouTube option to the main menu to access the following options: Featured, Most Viewed, Top Rated, History, Search and Log In.

YouTube announced it has begun encoding video in the H.264 format "to achieve higher video quality and longer battery life on mobile devices." The move will make it feasible to watch YouTube videos on the new Apple iPhone, expected to hit the shelves June 29.

We've created a short gallery of images documenting the update process and new menu items on the Apple TV. To see the captions explaining each shot, just click on one to go to the single image display screen.
