"Peak-a-boo," "Orange XI," and "IslandbnalsI" were chosen as our May winners. Congratulations to Edwin S. Loyola, Edward G. Harp, and Marius Sabo!

We're happy to announce the monthly winners of our Photo of the Day contest for May, 2007. (Our sincere apologies for the *very* late announcement!) Here's a look at May's winners, along with some comments from the judges:

First Place
Peak-a-boo, by Edwin S. Loyola
(Edwin won a Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Printer.)

While it's obviously a studio set, the judges loved this picture for a variety of reasons. The lighting did a wonderful job of calling attention to the baby and setting it apart from the surroundings, but the contrast between the baby's organic form and the sharp geometries of the set also contributed, as did the monochrome/color division between subject and background. Very, very well done!

Second Place
Orange XI, by Edward G. Harp
(Edward won a Canon PIXMA MP960 Printer.)

The judges were drawn to the painterly sensibilities of this shot, the rich color and texture of the flowers, and the way the semirandom arrangement drew their eyes. A shot any of us would be happy to hang on our walls!

Third Place
IslandbnalsI, by Marius Sabo
(Marius won a Canon PIXMA iP6700D Printer.)

Symmetry and the contrast between the still lake and sky and the strong detail of the trees kept drawing our eyes back to this one. The near-perfect exposure contributed as well, with lots of interesting details revealing themselves as we continued to gaze at it. Very nice!

On Guard Duty!, Mario Aguilar

Future of Africa, John Strickler

Eye Lashes, Anupam Pal
