Microsoft has today officially released final versions of its HD Photo plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop CS2 and CS3.

The plug-ins can open and save files in Microsoft's HD Photo format, also known as Windows Media Photo. Versions are available for both Macintosh OS X 10.4 / 10.5 and Windows XP / Vista. According to the HD Photo Blog authored by program manager Bill Crow, while the Mac version is limited to use with Photoshop CS2 and CS3, the Windows version can unofficially work with limited features on older versions of Photoshop. The readme file included with the Windows download indicates that one such version is Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, although no definitive list of unofficially compatible versions is given (and hence, readers will need to try the download themselves should they wish to ascertain compatibility with a particular version).

The 790KB Windows download and 718KB Macintosh download are said to be functionally identical to previously available beta versions released last summer, with all changes being to fix minor bugs and security vulnerabilities, as well as removal of the expiration date and "Beta" labels from the products.
