Missed Black Friday?
By
(Tuesday, November 25, 2008 - 13:19 EST)

The Internet still has hot deals worth checking out today, and for the rest of the month.

So if you missed Black Friday's deals, there's still time to shop online and get some great prices on digital cameras.

When we looked last week, we found that most often, Internet prices handily beat the Black Friday advertised prices. In only a few cases was the store sale better, and even then you'd still have to pay taxes.

We've rechecked the prices for Cyber Monday, and listed them below, next to the best Black Friday had to offer.

A few notes before you go shopping:

  • Taxes: Remember that though the advertised price may be lower at the store, most retail stores charge a state and local sales tax that can raise the price significantly, while most Internet sales are tax-free.

  • Shipping: Online retailers usually charge a shipping fee, but most retailers are dropping the shipping fee for the holidays; either way, our shopping engine lists the before and after shipping price for your convenience.

  • Shop Smart: Remember that the lowest price is not always the best, and if it seems too good to be true, it usually is. Check each retailer's ratings, and watch for refurbished items. We do our best to eliminate retailers with a history of abusive practices, and we have eliminated several in just the last few months. My short list of retailers where I shop personally: B&H Photo, NewEgg, Adorama, and Amazon. Dave and others here also like J&R, BuyDig, DBuys, and 17th Street Photo.

  • Beware the upsell and bait and switch: There is no reason a retailer should call or email you to offer you more items, or to change your order to another camera because the one you ordered is "out of stock." A reputable retailer will email you with an out-of-stock notice and allow you to cancel your order. None of our retailers should do this to you. If you have any trouble along these lines, contact us. We want your shopping experience through Imaging-Resource.com to be safe and enjoyable, so we will do what it takes to address problems as they occur, and remove retailers that are dishonest or abusive. There are enough good retailers on the Internet that we don't have to put up with the bad ones.

  • Be selective: We know it's hard to pass up a low price, but we work hard here at Imaging-Resource.com to thoroughly test digital cameras so you can choose the one that's right for you without taking the risk of getting a bad camera. As such, we have not listed some of the under-$100 cameras we've seen in the Black Friday ads simply because we know they're very low-quality digital cameras that aren't worth your consideration at any price. We could list them if we wanted to, but we don't think it's the right thing to do, plain and simple.

  • Check back! Internet prices can change at this time of year, often dropping on Black Friday, so check back here before you go out.

  • Strike early. Finally, know that Internet prices do fluctuate. As we've watched over the past few years, prices on popular cameras have dipped until about the first week of December, then they started to rise. Word to the wise.
