Picmeta Systems released version 5.2 of its Picture Information Extractor (PIE), which includes numerous new features such as batch editing of IPTC metadata.

The new PIE 5.2 is smallest photo browser and viewer available that integrates an editor for IPTC data with batch editing capabilities. With just 3.8MB and support for all Windows versions from Windows 95 to Windows Vista it is perfectly suited for photographers on the go, or for those who want a lean and fast addition to their desktop environment.

Editing of metadata now works with all RAW formats. Many formats allow EXIF and IPTC metadata to be written directly into the file, thus no external database or sidecar file is required. The EXIFcare technology ensures that all information contained in the file is maintained. For example, the makernote block which hosts many vendor-specific data will not be overwritten as it usually happens with other programs.

If needed, the data will be stored in XMP sidecar files that are fully compatible with Adobe Photoshop. While other XMP-enabled applications add an XMP header to each file, PIE only updates already existing XMP data. Therefore, modification of the original file is limited to the minimum required.

The extensive metadata features of PIE allow batch manipulation of date/time values or automation of repetitive tasks such as transferring and renaming of image files. Vertical photos are automatically and losslessly rotated. Thanks to a large database of vendor-specific formats PIE is able to read makernote data of most cameras.

Other products by Picmeta Systems are PrintStation, a program for creating photo albums and proof sheets, and PIE Studio, which combines the metadata features of PIE with the printing functions of PrintStation.

Pricing and Availability
A free evaluation version of PIE 5.2 can be downloaded from the Picmeta Website. The software runs on Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP and Vista. The full version costs US$ 35.
