A new digital picture frame announced today by Germany's JOBO AG offers a pretty unusual feature - the ability to scan photo prints for display on the frame.

The JOBO ScanViewer has an eight-inch TFT LCD display with 800x600 pixel resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. Contrast ratio for the display is 400:1, and 1GB of internal memory is provided along with slots to read CompactFlash, Secure Digital (including MMC and SDHC), Memory Stick, and xD-Picture Card media. There's also USB 2.0 and USB On-the-Go (USB host) connectivity, with which to transfer images and videos to the ScanViewer. File formats suitable for output on the device include JPEG stills, as well as MPEG-1, MPEG-4 and AVI video, and MP3 audio. The JOBO ScanViewer offer still image, slideshow and 4-in-1 collage functions, all with the ability to play background music simultaneously. There's also a clock / calendar function with alarm, an energy-saving mode, and the ability to manage images on the device (copying, rotation, deletion, zoom, and printing).

As its name suggests, the ScanViewer supplements all of these relatively standard specs with one standout feature - the ability to scan photo prints directly, using a built-in 300dpi scanner that accepts prints from 1.6" x 2" to 4" x 6" in size. Depending on the print size being scanned, that can yield images at resolutions anywhere from 480 x 600 to 1200 x 1800 pixels in size.

The JOBO ScanViewer comes with a remote control, AC adapter, USB cable, protective cover, and calibration / cleaning paper. The device weighs 13 ounces, and has dimensions of 3.9 x 1.6 x 0.5 inches. Availability in Europe is set for December 2009, with a pricetag of €259.00.

JOBO Introduces the Unique New ScanViewer

High resolution 8-inch multimedia digital picture frame features built-in photo scanner

Gummersbach, Germany (November 9, 2009) – JOBO AG announces today the addition of the new ScanViewer to the growing JOBO family of digital picture frames. This high resolution 8” multimedia digital picture frame features a built-in photo scanner to help bring old analogue prints that have been trapped in dusty shoe boxes back to life.

This innovative and unique new product quickly and easily digitizes up to 4x6-inch (10x15cm) printed photos and presents them directly on its 8” high resolution display. Via a USB connection, the scanned pictures that have been saved to the JOBO ScanViewer’s 1 GB internal memory can be transferred to a connected PC or be printed to a PictBridge™ compatible photo printer. This multimedia digital picture frame plays videos, as well as music, and can be operated intuitively and conveniently by its touch activated buttons or via remote control.

“JOBO is pleased to offer this one-of-kind digital picture frame to photo enthusiasts,” said Johannes Bockemuehl-Simon, JOBO’s CEO. “The new ScanViewer allows users to blend their old and forgotten photographic prints with their new modern digital images and video files which they can then set to music for creative and original image slideshows to share with family and friends.”

The JOBO ScanViewer will be available at retail in December for € 259.00.
