Hewlett Packard has today returned to the digital camera market after an absence of several years since ceasing production at the end of 2007.

In the runup to the Photo Marketing Association tradeshow, HP has unveiled five new entry-level digital camera models, ranging from around $100 to $150 in price. The HP CW450, CW450t, SW450 and PW460t all feature 4x optical zoom lenses with 29mm wide angle, while the PW550 opts for a 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle. All five cameras have a effective resolutions of 12.2 megapixels from 1/2.3"-type CCD image sensors.

The HP PW550, SW450, CW450t and CW450 all have 2.7-inch LCD displays. The HP PW460t opts for a larger 3.0-inch panel. Both the HP CW450t and PW460t include touch screen capabilities, allowing photos to be captured by simply tapping on the subject on-screen. The HP CW450 and CW450t draw power from two AA batteries, while the HP SW450, PW460t and PW550 are powered by proprietary lithium ion rechargeables. All five cameras store images on SD or SDHC cards, but not the newer SDXC types.

The Hewlett Packard CW450 is the entry level model, priced at around $100. For more details on this camera, read our HP CW450 preview. Next up the line, the Hewlett Packard CW450t has a ten dollar premium for its touch-screen panel, and is further described in our HP CW450t preview. The Hewlett Packard SW450 is the lightest and joint smallest of the group. Priced at around $130, more information on this entry-level camera is provided in our HP SW450 preview. Adding a larger 3.0" display with touch screen creates the Hewlett Packard PW460t - the same size, but a little heavier and $20 more expensive. Our HP PW460t preview further describes this $150 camera. Finally, swapping the touch panel and 3" display for a 5x optical zoom brings the Hewlett Packard PW550 in at the same $150 price point. More details in our HP PW550 preview.

Alongside the five new digital cameras, HP has also announced three flash-based digital camcorders. The cheapest of the trio is the 720p-capable HP V1020h, priced at $110. The $170 HP V5061u adds 1080p recording and dual battery format support - both lithium ion rechargeable and AA. The most expensive of the group is the HP V5560u, priced at$200 and featuring a 5x optical zoom lens.

Original Source Press Release:

HP Unveils Digital Cameras and Camcorders Featuring Touch Technology, Intuitive User Interface and Powerful Optical Zoom

ANAHEIM, Calif., Feb. 19, 2010 - HP today introduced five point-and-shoot digital cameras and three camcorders with features such as LCD displays, up to 5X optical zoom and fashionable colors.
The cameras and camcorders come in slim, lightweight designs at prices ranging from $99 to $199.(1)They are expected to be available this spring at select retailers.

Adding to its growing portfolio of touch-enabled notebooks and desktops, HP now features LCD touchscreen displays on select cameras and camcorders. In addition, select models feature a new intuitive user interface that makes them a snap to use. Interface improvements include a high color contrast to help ensure better visibility of menus and a choice of more than 25 scene modes to help ensure photos are of the highest quality.

When choosing a scene mode, the display shows two images – how the photo will look in auto mode and how it will look in the selected scene mode. For example, choosing “snow” mode during a ski trip can transform overly bright, washed-out photos into vibrant depictions of the snowcapped mountains.

“HP is giving consumers a better way to interact with point-and-shoot cameras by offering models with advanced features at a great value,” said Mark Ostendorf, manager, Business Development, Personal Systems Group, HP. “Entry-level consumers will love the HP CW series while customers who want a premium experience will enjoy the touch interface of the HP CW450t or PW460t and two of our new camcorders.”

The CW450t is available in two colors – blue and merlot – and priced at $109.(1) The PW460t is available in pink and charcoal gray and priced at $149.(1)

The latest HP touchscreen digital camcorders – the V5061u and V5560u – feature large 3-inch LCD touchscreen displays, 1,080p high-definition (HD) recording and motion-detection capabilities.

The V5061u provides a dual SD/SDHC memory card for plenty of room to record, and an option to install AA batteries if the lithium-ion battery is not charged. The V5560u and V5061u are priced at $199 and $169,(1) respectively.

The V5061u records 1080p and supports dual lithium ion / AA batteries for $170. Photo provided by Hewlett Packard Development Company L.P. Click for a bigger picture!
