Steve Sanders tries out a pre-production Olympus digital camera...

IR reader Thomas Kroener emailed noting that the good folks over at Steve's Digicams have posted a first-look review at Olympus' C-4040 Zoom, the first we've seen of the 4 megapixel digicam which was announced back on June 20th. Despite being labelled a first look, Steve does draw conclusions, noting that:
"The Olympus C-4040 Zoom joins a growing list of similar Olympus cameras (C-3040, C-3030, C-3000, C-2040, C-2020) that I have no problem recommending to anybody that is looking for an excellent digicam. These cameras all share the same body style and are loaded with real camera features and controls. They're easy to use in Program AE mode but ready to satisfy the needs of advanced users at the turn of a mode dial. As with all digicams the real bottom line is the image quality and these cameras consistently deliver properly exposed, sharp, true to the original color images."
There's also plenty of sample images to look at - note that they're from a preproduction camera though and hence may differ significantly from what a production camera produces. They should offer at least a baseline of performance however, and hence are certainly still interesting! Read Steve's first look for more...
