Phil Askey and Steve Sanders review Nikon's first entry into the ultra-compact digicam marketplace...

Our good friends at the Steve's Digicams and Digital Photography Review websites have both posted full reviews of Nikon's Coolpix 775 digital camera, a model we recently looked at ourselves. Steve seemed quite impressed by the camera, wrapping up as follows:
"With a suggested retail price of just $449 the Coolpix 775 is going to find its way into the hands of many novice and expert users. The only thing you really need to buy is a larger CF card, everything else including the rechargeable battery, charger and a suite of software is included in the base package. If you're looking for a small digital camera with the image quality of the "big boys" then give the Nikon Coolpix 775 a serious look-see, you won't be sorry."
Phil, meanwhile, concludes:
"Unfortunately I feel that the [Coolpix] 775 is let down by its lens which doesn't appear to be capable of delivering the resolution or the sharpness we've come to expect from Coolpix digital cameras. In our side-by-side image quality comparisons the 775 is clearly not delivering the same sharpness and resolution as some of its competition.

Where the 775 appears to win is in its combination of size, features, image quality and price. The hard fact for this camera is that its introduced into a market segment where the competition has already been able to get a foot-hold and where prices are all very similar."
For more, read both the Steve's Digicams and Digital Photography Review Nikon Coolpix 775 reviews. When you're done, take a look at our own review from the 24th of last month... Note, though, that whilst both our review and Phil's use preproduction cameras for the product and menu shots, Phil's review features sample images from a production-level camera. We hope to update our own review with production-level sample images soon! We couldn't see a note in Steve's review as to what level of camera was used for the product shots, menus or sample images...
