The Nikon Coolpix S70 features a sleek, compact body housing a roomy 288,000-dot 3.5-inch Organic LED display that occupies nearly the entire rear panel. Thanks to the touchscreen, the Nikon S70 has only one physical buttons on the camera body - the shutter release button. the camera powers on and off by sliding its lens barrier vertically to expose or conceal its Nikkor-branded 5x optical zoom lens. The lens includes true optical image stabilization, and offers focal lengths ranging from a generous 28mm equivalent wide angle to a 140mm equivalent telephoto. Sensor resolution is twelve megapixels, and the S70's CCD image sensor offers sensitivity up to ISO 1,600 equivalent at full resolution, or ISO 3,200 equivalent at three megapixels or below.

The Coolpix S70's touchscreen user interface allows for some pretty intuitive features. Users can simply touch a subject on the Nikon S70's screen to lock focus and exposure when shooting, and the touch of a fingertip can scroll or zoom when in playback mode. The electrostatic capacitive touch-panel is multi-touch capable, meaning that it cam detect multiple fingers touching the screen at once. This allows for gestures similar to those used on Apple's popular iPhone, such as "pinching" the screen to control zooming in or out. Switching between images is achieved with a swipe of the finger, and the user interface includes touch-friendly features like on-screen sliders to control the effect of the camera's scene modes.

Nikon's Auto Scene Selector mode gives the camera the ability to automatically select the correct scene mode for the situation - be it a landscape, portrait, or perhaps a macro photo. When in portrait mode, the Nikon Coolpix S70 also offers both smile detection (the camera automatically releases the shutter when the subject in the photo smiles), as well as a blink warning that displays a warning on-screen if your subject's eyes weren't open.

In a first for a Nikon Coolpix camera, the S70 also offers a high-definition 720p, 30 frames-per-second movie mode, although there's no high-definition video connectivity on the camera body. A rechargeable EN-EL12 Lithium Ion battery is included with the Coolpix S70, and should yield 200 shots on a charge. Both SD and SDHC memory cards can be used, and the S70 also includes 20MB of built-in memory.

The Nikon Coolpix S70 has a dual-textured front panel, and will be available in black, red, or champagne with either beige or light brown accent panel. It is due to ship in the USA from September 2009 with pricing of about $400.
