Fujifilm FinePix S2000HD Performance

Timing and Performance

Average performance for a long zoom digital camera.

Startup/Shutdown

Power on
to first shot

1.8 seconds

Time it takes for LCD to turn on and lens to deploy and capture a picture.

Shutdown

2.8 seconds

How long it takes to retract lens.

Buffer clearing time

26 seconds in Top 33 mode
(4 seconds buffer clearing in LF JPEG)

Worst case buffer clearing time. -- This is the delay after a set of shots before you can remove the card. Some cameras won't retract their lenses and shut down until the buffer is cleared.

About average startup time, though shutdown is a bit sluggish. Worst-case buffer clearing is very slow.

Mode Switching

Play to Record,
first shot

1.0 second

Time until first shot is captured.

Record to play

1.5 seconds

Time to display a large/fine file immediately after capture.

Display
recorded image

1.1 seconds

Time to display a large/fine file already on the memory card.

Mode switching times are about average.

Shutter Response (Lag Time)

Full Autofocus Wide

0.683 second

Time from fully pressing shutter button to image capture, zoom lens at wide angle position.

Full Autofocus Tele

0.498 second

Time from fully pressing shutter button to image capture, zoom lens at telephoto position.

Prefocused

0.018 second

Time to capture, after half-pressing and holding shutter button.

Continuous AF

0.668 second

This mode usually shows no speed increase with our static subject; we have no way to measure performance with moving subjects.

Manual Focus

0.277 second

For most cameras, shutter lag is less in manual focus than autofocus, but usually not as fast as when the camera is "prefocused."

Full Autofocus Flash

0.952 second

Time to capture while forcing flash to fire.

Shutter response is better than average at both wide angle and telephoto, at 0.68s and 0.50s respectively. Enabling the flash extends shutter lag to 0.95s. "Prefocusing" the camera by half-pressing and holding down the shutter button before the final exposure results in a lag time of 0.018 second, which is very good, however.

Cycle Time (shot to shot)
Single Shot mode
Large Fine JPEG
2.78 seconds

Time per shot, averaged over 20 shots.

Single Shot mode
640 x 480 JPEG

1.91 seconds

Time per shot, averaged over 20 shots.

Early shutter
penalty?

No

Some cameras don't snap another shot if you release and press the shutter too quickly in Single Shot mode, making "No" the preferred answer.

Continuous mode LONG PERIOD
Large Fine JPEG

2.06 second (0.49 frames per second);
20+ frames total;
4 seconds to clear

Time per shot, averaged over buffer length or 20 shots, whichever came first.

Continuous mode LONG PERIOD
640x480 JPEG

1.75 second (0.57 frames per second);
20+ frames total;
2 seconds to clear

Time per shot, averaged over buffer length or 20 shots, whichever came first.

Continuous mode TOP 3
Large Fine JPEG

0.93 second (1.08 frames per second);
3 frames total;
7 seconds to clear

Time per shot, averaged over buffer length or 20 shots, whichever came first.

Continuous mode TOP 3
640x480 JPEG

0.74 second (1.36 frames per second);
3 frames total;
5 seconds to clear

Time per shot, averaged over buffer length or 20 shots, whichever came first.

Continuous mode TOP 33
5MP JPEG

0.16 second (6.39 frames per second);
33 frames total;
26 seconds to clear

Time per shot, averaged over buffer length or 20 shots, whichever came first.

Continuous mode TOP 33
3MP or less JPEG

0.08 second (13.16 frames per second);
33 frames total;
20 seconds to clear

Time per shot, averaged over buffer length or 20 shots, whichever came first.

Flash recycling

8.3 seconds

Flash at maximum output.

*Note: Buffer clearing times measured with a SanDisk Extreme III 8GB SDHC memory card. Slower cards will produce correspondingly slower clearing times. Slow cards may also limit length of bursts in continuous mode. ISO sensitivity also affects cycle times and burst mode performance, with higher ISOs generally increasing cycle times and reducing burst performance.

Shot-to-shot cycle times are sluggish, at about 2.78 seconds for large/fine JPEGs, though the camera does capture frames continuously at this rate. (That is, given a fast enough memory card, it doesn't have to pause every few frames to wait for the card to catch up.) Continuous mode cycle times are also a bit slow in the Long Period and Top 3 modes, with a very slow 0.49 frames per second in the Long Period large/fine JPEG setting. Where the Fujifilm FinePix S2000HD performs best is in its Top 33 Continuous modes, which capture 13.16 frames per second for a total of 33 frames at the lowest resolutions. Though resolution is limited here, this is still a very fast frame rate. The flash takes about 8.3 seconds to recycle, which is about average.

Download Speed

Windows Computer, USB 2.0

13,469 KBytes/sec

Typical Values:
Less than 600=USB 1.1;
600-769=USB 2.0 Low;
Above 770=USB 2.0 High

Connected to a computer or printer with USB 2.0, download speeds are very good.

Overall, the Fujifilm FinePix S2000HD is on the slower side of average, with markedly slow standard Continuous modes. However, it does an excellent job in its Top 33 Continuous modes, which should easily keep up with very fast-paced action shots. Thus, the Fujifilm FinePix S2000HD will likely have you tapping your foot when changing modes and capturing a lot of high resolution images, but it attempts to make up for it with the Top 33 modes. Overall, a mixed bag, but standard performance is suitable for most situations.

Battery and Storage Capacity

Battery
Good battery life with lithium batteries, but average performance with alkalines.

Operating Mode Number of Shots
AA Alkaline batteries
300
AA NiMH rechargeable batteries
400
AA Lithium batteries
650

The Fujifilm FinePix S2000HD uses four AA-type batteries for power, and ships with a set of ordinary alkalines. Thus, we strongly recommend you pick up a couple of sets of good-quality NiMH rechargeable batteries and a good-quality charger, as they'll save you many times their cost over the life of the camera.

The table above shows the number of shots the camera is capable of (on a fresh set of disposable batteries), based on Fujifilm's standard test conditions.

Storage
The Fujifilm FinePix S2000HD accepts SD/SDHC/MMC memory cards, and includes about 58MB of internal memory.

We strongly recommend buying a large capacity SD/SDHC memory card. (These days, 2-4GB is a good trade-off between cost and capacity.)
