Notes & Features: Based on the previous Nikon D2X model. Can be switched to a high-speed cropped mode, which allows 8 frames per second. This mode reduces resolution to 6.8 megapixels, cropped from the center of the sensor. This increases the effective focal length multiplier to 2.0x, and reduces the number of useable AF points to nine. The cropped area is indicated by a user-selectable shaded crop in the viewfinder. Both matrix and center-weighted metering revised to work normally within cropped area in high-speed cropped mode. New LCD display as previously seen in the Nikon D200. New EN-EL4a battery type has increased power. Black and white mode added (color can be restored in NEF Raw mode). Cropping in camera is possible. Camera settings can be saved and loaded (so they can be shared among a set of users). Burst mode now runs 1-60 rather than 1-35. 'Recent Settings' lets you quickly review your most recent changes (like the D200) -- and you can lock them. Image authentication enabled (for forensic shooting), guaranteeing the image has not been altered. A hardware/software approach using a USB key to guarantee software hasn't been hacked, too. Focus tracking with lock and short or long duration options. Multiple custom curves can be loaded. ISO Auto allows you to select shutter speed now. Compatible with PENTAX 645AF2, 645AF, and 645A mount lenses. Has dual SD/SDHC card slots.
