(From Canon lens literature) Helping to pave the way for our RF-S lens line, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM is an all-around lens that is ideal for creative photography and movies, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM combines legendary Canon Optics with a versatile zoom range and quiet operation for flexibility on the go. This lens was designed with smaller APS-C sensors in mind, and when attached to a full frame EOS R camera, automatically enables the 1.6x crop mode.  It offers 100% x 100% Dual Pixel CMOS AF coverage for APS-C sensors, and 80% x 80% Dual Pixel CMOS AF coverage for Full Frame sensors (in crop mode). Delivering remarkable performance for everyday use, the lead screw-type stepping motor (STM) helps ensure smooth autofocus and quiet operation, letting you capture videos with great audio and minimal background noise so you won't distract your subject in a quiet photo environment. Optical Image Stabilization provides up to 4.5 stops of correction, and up to 6.5 stops with Coordinated IS.  This advanced image stabilization can result in sharper photos with minimal blur, even in low light situations.  For landscapes, portraits, sports, videos and everything in between, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM provides great versatility with its magnificent optics, comprehensive zoom range and flexible design.

Extended-range, RF-S mount Zoom Lens For APS-C Cameras.

With high performance and high magnification, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM puts a versatile zoom range of 18-150mm (35mm equivalent coverage 29-240mm) into a lens that gives you flexibility on the go. It was designed for Canon APS-C cameras, but is compatible with the entire EOS R-series full-frame line. When attached to a full frame EOS R camera, an automatic 1.6x sensor crop is enabled, matching the full-frame sensor to the RF-S lens's coverage. Its optical system and simple operation ensure high image quality while keeping the lens easy to use, so it's simply there when you need it. The extended zoom range makes this a perfect companion for travel or simply documenting life's experiences, for both video and still images.

Lead Screw-type STM

Canon's stepping motor (STM) technology is especially effective at producing smooth, quiet autofocus during video recording. This lens is a perfect choice for multi-media content creation, with its zoom range and quiet autofocus. And, STM focus drive provides responsive, quick - and exceptionally quiet - AF during still-image shooting, as well.

Image Stabilization with up to 4.5 Stops* of Shake Correction

For consistently sharp results, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM features built-in optical Image Stabilization, providing enhanced shake reduction for up to 4.5 stops* of shake correction. When paired with an EOS R-series camera that has In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), the Coordinated IS allows for up to 6.5 stops of correction. This means more reliable handheld performance and clearer detail in low-light situations, without having to increase the ISO or decrease the shutter speed. Because of its enhanced stabilization, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM can also help minimize the need for a tripod.

Two Aspherical Elements and Canon Super Spectra Coating

Taking advantage of the Canon RF lens mount, the RF-S18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM lens offers great optical quality. Its optical design includes two aspheric elements, one Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) glass element for high image quality from center to corner, and Canon Super Spectra Coating to minimize ghosting and flare.

Better than it has any right to be, and nice and light and compact. My new walk-around lens.
Yeah, it's a repackaged EF-M lens, but it takes good pictures. Imaging Resource hasn't yet tested this lens and put up its interactive sharpness graph (which I use to choose f/stops).

I didn't want to buy this lens, but Canon was not shipping many boxes of the R7 body by itself, leaving me on a many month's-long waiting list (I had ordered the day after the R7 was announced). When I realized that this was the situation from seeing the body back-ordered while the box with the kit lens was in stock, I changed my order to include the lens and it was shipped to me the same day.

I idly snapped a few pictures with this kit lens, includng a shot at ISO 400 of an 8 1/5"x11" music book open on my piano about 30 feet away, with the lens set to 150mm, wide open at f/6.3 and hand-held at 1/40th of a second. I opened it up on the camera's screen and looked at the music book, which took up the bottom left corner of the screen, a quarter of its height and a sixth of its width. Magnified it on the screen (and in the viewfinder) and was amazed at how clear the image was. And this wasn't even the center of the lens!

I'll keep my EF-S 18-135mm nano USM lens to use with the power zoom attachment for videos (I bought that attachment on eBay becayse it's long discontinued) but this RF-S kit lens will be my new walk-around lens.
