Lightweight Compact Quiet AF Excellent IQFragile build needs some care Slow lens speed
Picked up one of these in LN condition from an eBay seller in Japan for half the the retail price. Awesome consumer lens that negates the need for more pricey glass if lens speed isn't a critical issue. You miss out on super duper bokeh and ramp up the ISOs a bit sooner but as a fair weather lens this is very adequate.

Performs very well due to a good build quality for consumer grade - AF is very quick and quiet. IQ is like many lenses - wide open varies but stopped down it can take great images on my Sony a65 body. My sample even shoots well at the long end, where many long tele's suffer. Look for a good deal online as this model is still in production but has been around for a while. Another great optic from Sony. -

You get a lot of bang for your buck with this lens. I tested it on a A57.

Sharp centre performance at all focul lengths when stopped down although a tad soft at 135. F/5.6 and above are the best settings. Corners and edges a bit soft at all focul lengths but sharpened up nicely at F/5.6+ It certainly performs better than the 16-105. Its never going to match a prime or even the CZ 16-80 for IQ, but it is surprisingly close and makes you wonder if the extra cost of the CZ was actually worth it?
Made in Japan and excellent build quality are the pluses and the zoom range makes it an ideal lens for a day trip where you don't want to carry lots of other lenses. Colour rendition stays the same through out the zoom range with typical Sony bright and punchy colours.
Super lens that out performes some of the Canikons of similar spec and just look at the price. -

On the A 57 it handles like a dream. Very speedy AF that is almost inaudible. The IQ is very good, matching those above it's price point. Feels very solid and zooms very fluently without any stiffer points. For this price THE allround lens to get for your A57. The in practice feeling is just stunning compared to (much) higher priced allround lenses. IQ seriously better then the longer megazooms (So, Si, Ta et all). Even on the A 65 this lens performed flawlessly. IQ in close focus is very nice. The ibs of the SLT bodies brings about 4 stops extra, easy.
