Nikon D3200 previewed: boosts speed and resolution, courts Android users

Nikon has today announced its latest consumer digital SLR, the Nikon D3200. As the name would suggest, it's a followup to the D3100, which launched back in late 2010. The new model boosts resolution significantly, but simultaneously brings a step forward in terms of speed.
The D3200's new DX-format image sensor has a resolution of 24.2 megapixels. That's almost double the total pixel count of the D3100, equating to an increase of around 30% in the sensor's linear resolution. Despite the increase in pixel density, Nikon has simultaneously brought ISO 6,400 inside the standard sensitivity range of the D3200, where previously this was considered an expanded sensitivity option. (The overall sensitivity range of 100 to 12,800 equivalents is unchanged, however.) Burst shooting speed has also increased from three to four frames per second in the new model.
The changes don't just relate to the image sensor, however. The Nikon D3200 also sports a new, higher-resolution 3.0-inch, 920,000 dot LCD display, and adds an external stereo microphone jack. It also now offers three choices of frame rate at the highest-resolution Full HD / 1080p movie mode: 30, 25, or 24 frames per second. Another new feature is support for higher-speed UHS-I Secure Digital cards. The overall body styling has also been given a subtle refresh, although overall layout is similar. The most significant change is the relocation of the movie button to the top panel, with the Live View control now being a button instead of a lever. Likewise, drive mode has changed to a button, instead of a lever. Overall body size has increased slightly, but body-only weight remains unchanged.
So... what's the hook for Android users? Well, if you've been with Google's operating system for long, you're probably fairly familiar with being treated like something of a second-class citizen by developers, with applications invariably appearing first on Apple's iOS operating system, then making their way over to Android some weeks or months later with a user interface that feels like an iOS app shoehorned into an Android shell. Nikon flips that convention on its head, by launching a quarter-sized USB wireless adapter for the D3200, and promising an Android app at launch, while iOS users will have to wait until later this fall. The app will allow remote shooting and live view from an Android smartphone or tablet, and will also provide for full-res or resized image transfer without cables. Pretty cool, although the device sticks out of the left side of the camera body and its use means leaving the connector compartment door open, so it's perhaps not a 24/7 solution. Note, though, that while it allows remote shooting, remote settings changes are not possible.
The Nikon D3200 ships from late April 2012 in either red or black versions, priced at around US$700 with an 18-55mm VR kit lens. The wireless dongle will follow from late May for around $60.
