Gary Fong's Gamma diffuser for Sony flash strobes. Photo provided by Gary Fong Inc.Photo accessory company Gary Fong Inc. has launched a new flash diffuser compatible with Sony's unusual Quick Shift Bounce flash strobes. The Gary Fong Gamma Diffuser works with both the flagship HVL-F58AM strobe, and its somewhat less powerful (but more affordable) younger sibling, the HVL-F43AM.

The Gamma diffuser straps firmly onto the head of either strobe, and so swivels with it for use in portrait or landscape orientation. The diffuser panel angles backwards to collect light from the flash head, and is quite large. (Indeed, creator Gary Fong likens it to his earlier WhaleTail design, a name that nicely hints at both the shape and size of both products.) An open back allows the remainder of the strobe's light to continue to the ceiling, for bounce purposes.

The result, says Fong, is a nice balance between ceiling bounce and a direct, more diffuse light.

Available immediately, the Gary Fong Gamma Diffuser is priced at around US$30. More details including a video showing the Gamma in use can be found on the Gary Fong eStore.
