The White House News Photographer Association has held its annual "Eyes of History" photography competition, and has awarded two photographers top honors. Astrid Riecken has been named “Photographer of the Year” and Getty's Win McNamee has won “Political Photo of the Year” for a shot of President Obama.
Riecken not only won the title “Photographer of the Year”, but also came first place in Feature, Picture Story International, Portfolio, second place in Picture Story Feature, and third place in Portrait. Riecken is a freelance photographer, but works extensively for the Washington Post. In a press release, Riecken is quoted as saying, “I am very, very happy and extremely grateful that this happened. I appreciate this honor and recognition.”
The overall "Political Photo of the Year" was awarded for this shot of the President, which was taken in the Brady White House Press Briefing Room, as President Obama spoke on the Trayvon Martin case.
The organization also gave out awards for Video, Multimedia, and Student work. All the winning photographers will be honored at a black tie gala held in Washington DC. You can see more of the winning images here.
