What’s not to love about a photo contest where the people get to vote for their favorites? The finalists in the 11th annual Smithsonian Photo Contest were announced last week, and voting is open through May 6, 2014.

A total of 60 photos were nominated for awards in six categories, including the natural world, travel, people, Americana, altered images, and a new category, mobile. The finalists were selected from more than 50,000 entries, submitted by photographers from 132 countries.

The photos are all stunning, of course, but it’s also fun to see the diversity of cameras used—everything from the Leica M240 down to an iPhone 4. Most are Canon or Nikon full-frame models from the past 5 years or so. But you’d be hard-pressed to tell which photos came from which hardware.

Head over to the Smithsonian's voting page to check out the photo gallery and cast your ballot—it's going to be hard to pick, because all the shots are excellent. The votes are tallied in real-time, so a few early favorites are beginning to emerge. The winners will be announced on May 15, so stay tuned!
