It seems each and every day a new light modifier is released into the wild. However, until you understand the basics of modifying light and the options they can truly provide, it’s difficult to appreciate just how valuable the most simple pieces of lighting gear can be.

Tony Corbell, on behalf of of Sekonic, helps put things into perspective by sharing ten different ways you can use the same softbox. In the 22-minute video, shared below, he walks through the most basic practices for using a softbox before diving into more clever approaches to using its soft light.

Throughout the video, Corbell changes between using a simple one-light setup with the softbox and tossing in additional modifiers, such as a reflector, to further modify the single light source. The video and its principles are fairly basic, but there’s incredible value in learning just how many options a single light modifier brings to your work.
