When you stop to think about it, the technology inside of your digital camera is pretty amazing. Even the most basic, entry-level DSLR or mirrorless camera today provides image quality far beyond what was possible even from professional gear costing tens of thousands of dollars, just a couple of decades ago. But even as incredible as today's retail photography gear is, it's not a patch on what's possible with bleeding-edge tech developed for scientific research, military or aerospace use and government surveillance, to name just a few fields.
Demonstrating the point nicely, Curious Droid has put together a video showing what they think are five of the world's most amazing cameras. On the list are the world's highest-resolution commercial satellite; an amazingly high-res camera from DARPA that can monitor an entire city in realtime; the world's largest camera, which is currently under construction in Chile; the world's fastest camera, which is capable of recording light pulses in motion; and the world's smallest camera, which is barely any larger than the diameter of a hypodermic needle.
Watch the video above to see more about all five of these amazing cameras. If you want even more amazing tech, how about this research which promises to make silent videos audible once more, a way to see who was present at a photo's capture using corneal reflections, or perhaps the camera that promises to bring an end to overexposed images?
