GoPro, who has seemed to notice their customers' penchant for holding on to what they consider to be "outdated" equipment, has announced a program to try and get their huge user base to upgrade to their latest HERO5 action camera. In GoPro's words, they want all users "to experience the new, cloud-connected GoPro and unlock breakthrough software upgrades slated for 2017." From yesterday's launch through May 11, 2017, GoPro will be offering $100 off a new HERO5 Black or $50 off a HERO5 Session when you trade-in any previous-generation GoPro HERO camera.

To participate in GoPro's Trade-Up Program,  visit the Trade-Up website, select the new camera you want to upgrade to, and then follow the instructions to return your previous-generation GoPro HERO camera. Upon receiving the returned camera, GoPro will process the discount and ship a new HERO5 camera. For the full details on the program, the terms and conditions are listed here

Looking at this from my perspective, a couple of reasons GoPro could be doing this immediately come to mind. First, they may simply be wanting to get more people using the latest generation cameras; it may be as straightforward as that. The second reason, and the one that I personally believe is where GoPro is going with this, is to move more HERO5 cameras this quarter so that they can show an increase in sales of those cameras to investors. Even though you would be buying them for a discount, GoPro would still consider them sales and therefore it would show favorably on their next financial report.

Whatever the case may be, if you've been contemplating buying a new GoPro, this might be the best opportunity you'll have to get one and sell off your old GoPro in a single transaction.
