New Canon G1X Mark III brings Dual Pixel AF and a big APS-C sensor to the PowerShot family

Canon has announced their latest PowerShot, the G1X Mark III, their new flagship G-series compact camera. Changing focal lengths and sensor size over its predecessor, the G1X Mark III sports a 24-72mm-eq. f/2.8-5.6 lens paired with the same 24MP APS-C sized sensor found in the EOS M5 and 80D. It also is the first Canon point-and-shoot to bring their powerful and now-ubiquitous Dual Pixel CMOS AF tech, which will assuredly make its autofocus fast and accurate for both photo and video. It offers a slick interface that bridges both the rear touchscreen and the EVF, has in-camera panoramic stitching, and is touted by Canon as the most advanced point-and-shoot they have ever made for both amateurs and professionals alike.

The G1X Mark III make several advancements over the Mark II when it comes to stills, but don't come in expecting anything new for Canon in the video department. As it is the same DIGIC 7 processor and sensor found in the EOS M5, it offers similar video features, particularly a max video resolution of 1080p60. But the much larger sensor and Dual Pixel autofocus should make a big change from the G1X Mark II, and a genuine upgrade for fans of the system even if it's price is a bit steep: $1299.
