Overpowering or complementing the sun using artificial light

As the days get longer in the northern hemisphere, that means that the sun will be higher in the sky for longer periods of time, leading to more powerful and harsher light for outdoor shooting. How can you overpower the sun with flash (or monolight) and capture nicer-looking portraits? Tony Northrup shows us in the video below.

You can use artificial light to complement or overpower natural light. Another popular use for a flash outdoors is as a fill light, allowing you to reduce harsh shadows and make for a more pleasing, evenly-light photo. You can also overpower the sun if your light is powerful enough and make an outdoor background appear much darker.
