For photographers on the go, the decision to bring a tripod can be a tricky one. There are many excellent lightweight tripods, sure, but in addition to bringing another piece of gear on a trip, you also need time to set up the tripod. For photographers who don’t mind getting low, the Platypod has proven to be a nice option for many. However, what if you want a more traditional tripod working height but don’t want to deal with a heavy tripod or lengthy set-up process? Enter Lumapod, which has just launched on Kickstarter.

So far today, Lumapod has gone from a few thousand dollars to exceeding its goal of $40,550 USD. It is certainly proving popular with photographers. Essentially, it is an ultra-compact and fast tripod solution that offers a design not unlike a lightstand. However, unlike a simple stand, the Lumapod has Kevlar ropes from the universal camera mount to the three legs. You twist and extend and the ropes extend as you increase the height. There are two sizes, the Go85 and Go120, which have maximum heights of 33.5 and 47.3 inches respectively. Minimum heights are 13.2 and 17.5 inches. The smaller size weighs 0.88 pounds (400 grams) and the taller version weighs 1.65 pounds (690 grams). They can support 2.2 and 4.4 pounds respectively. Lumapod is said to offer a setup time from start to finish of only four seconds.

It certainly looks interesting and may work well for photographers on the go. Currently, you can get Go85 and Go120 tripods as an early backer for just under $100 USD. You can see the full specifications and backer options by clicking here.
