Using only natural light, Mark Wallace can capture high-contrast, grungy-looking portraits. Thanks to the newest episode of Adorama’s Exploring Photography with Mark Wallace, you can too.

Fortunately, you don’t need fancy lighting equipment for this technique. All you need is open shade, a lens which can shoot with a shallow depth of field and a creative post-processing technique. It’s important to find an open area in the shade, as it allows you to get some excellent catchlights in the eyes while keeping a somewhat flat light on your subject’s face. In the video below, Wallace photographs his subject on a covered patio, but there are many other locations which would work well. To learn about camera settings and then follow along with Wallace as he edits his images, watch the full video below. You can see more episodes of Exploring Photography by clicking here.
