For studio photographers, a v-flat can quickly become an indispensable tool. A v-flat can be used as a flag, as a background, to bounce light, to reduce bouncing light and much more. There’s a lot to like about v-flats, but generally speaking, there’s one big thing to dislike about them, they are themselves big. If you are talking about an eight-foot tall v-flat, which is a pretty standard size, that’s really cumbersome and nearly impossible to transport in a normal vehicle without damaging the v-flat. For a photographer on the go, a traditional v-flat can be very challenging to work with. However, there’s a company V-Flat World, which makes a folding V-Flat. They recently sponsored a video with photographer Manny Ortiz to show off how the product works and how it can be used.

In the video below, we see Ortiz using both the black and white sides of the portable v-flats to cut down light, add more fill, block light and even act as a background. The portable v-flats fold down to 40 inches tall and 40 inches wide and are put together using Velcro strips. A single foldable v-flat costs just under $200. For Ortiz, it’s well worth the price.
