In February, Tamron announced the development of three new lenses, including the 35-150mm f/2.8-4 Di VC OSD (Model A043) compact portrait zoom for DSLRs. We now have full details on the upcoming zoom lens, including pricing and release information.

The full-frame zoom lens offers a bright f/2.8 aperture at the wide end and maintains a quick f/4 aperture at the telephoto range of its zoom. Tamron has designed the lens to be well-suited for numerous types of portraits, including full-body shots and closer head-and-shoulders shots. With this in mind, there has been attention paid to the bokeh qualities of the lens.

Tamron has also focused on making the lens compact and lightweight, while also maintaining a moisture-resistant construction. The lens is just under 5 inches (around 125 millimeters) long and weighs about 28 ounces (790-plus grams). The lens features 19 elements across 14 groups, including a trio of Low Dispersion (LD) glass elements and an additional three hybrid aspherical elements. Tamron promises high-resolution performance as the lens has been designed to meet the requirements of 50-plus megapixel DSLR cameras. In backlit situations, the lens should perform well thanks to Tamron's Broad-Brand Anti-Reflection (BBAR) coating.

Focusing performance is driven by an Optimized Silent Drive (OSD) DC motor, which first debuted in Tamron's recent 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037) lens. As an aside, it is worth considering that when you combine the recent 17-35mm lens with the new 35-150mm lens, you have complete coverage across the 17mm to 150mm range on a full-frame DSLR. Tamron reports silent focusing in conjunction with fast, accurate autofocus performance. The minimum focus distance is 17.7 inches (45 centimeters) at all focal lengths, resulting in a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.7. Further, the lens includes Vibration Compensation (VC) and will offer up to five stops of shake reduction.
