  • Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

10 out of 10 points and recommended
light , fast AF, very powerful IS, sharp , cheap.
    plastic mount.

    I bought a 40D 4 days a go with this lens.

This is an amazing lens , very light , sharp (for its modest price tag)with powerful IS.

Canon's claim of 4 stop effective IS seems really true , this IS works well like the one on my 70-200f4LIS , and is definitely more effective than the one on my 17-55IS.

I thought about I would sell the ISed kit lens since I've got a EF-S17-55f2.8IS, but I will keep it for those days I want to go out light.........I also have the Tamorn 17-50 , which I also like.

The IS and digital sensor tech will change all , and eliminates needs for the F2.8.

Many people think F2.8 is so much better than F4 IS(so they are comparing 24-70L against 24-105LIS) in low light, I 'd say do not underestimate the IS , it is better than the one stop advantage of f2.8 over f4 most of times, thus, I do not use any non-IS lens in low light since my low light work requires lots of DOF, not the shallow F2.8 DOF.

That said , the 17-55f2.8IS is a super sharp lens and I need it for my work such as event photographey and weddings........other wise , I would not have bought it............I think most of people do not know what they really need for their photographing stuffs.......................so many of the 17-55IS or 24-105L are always bought by complete beginners who do not even know what lens they actually need or like and asking it at many forums.

I think if you do not know you will need the 17-55IS or 24-105L with EF-S10-22 combo , then you wont' need any of them and so get this 18-55IS instead.

If you really need a lens with a grand price tag, you know what you wnat or need without asking it at a forum................

The 18-55IS and 17-55f2.8 IS are completely different kind of lenses and so you 've got be careful.....................I have had both but I think most of photographers who can even no decide what to buy do not nee the latter the f2.8 IS........but those of you who are just starting out should buy this IS kit lens with a good flash.

UPDATE: one moron from DPreview.com Canon lens forum complaining about credibility of my review (he thinks it is not out yet), well I am woring in Japan and it's been out there for 3 weeks already.

The moron also said the IQ of the lens could not be 10, well , it is for the price rating, think about it , it costs only 130 US as you buy it as a part of a 40D kit.

I rate all lenses accordingly to their prices.

So I am not saying this is rated 10 and the 17-55IS is rated 10 , so they are the same in absolute IQ , but considering their price dfferential , there is no way not to rate both of them 10.

And the same moronic guy also said to a guy asking about this lens in comparion with the 17-40L , wait till a pro review out .........and what laughable about the moron was , he suggested to look at photozone.de, which is the most careless and unprofessional review ever.

Why morons can just trust theri own eyes but need some one to justify what they have chosen was right, what a insecurity is it?

  • Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

10 out of 10 points and recommended
shapest std zoom available in all mounts, super fast AF.
    none.

DO NOT BELIEVe morons , there is no dust issue and no flare issue with it.

the AF is fast and accurate even on the primitive camera like 350D and it is super sharp and its build quality is almost L level.

just use the food and buy the real food , then you won't have any flare issue.............

Read a good review on this amazing lens like MR. Castleman wrote..................

    http://www.wlcastleman.com/equip/reviews/17-85compare/index.htm

this is sharper than all other zooms in this focal range or similar......................

just do not compare it to the 60 macro or EF70-200f4L IS , they beat it hands down but they are super exceptional lenses, indeed.

PS. I do use it for my wedding work and my travel photography for some companies that I 've been working for but I never had any dust issue in 7 months , I do not baby it , abusing it .........

sharp , vibrant color , resistant to flare , almost no CA.
    none.

just the best UWA ever made , no need to compare it with others.

Just get it if you need an UWA.

  • Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM

10 out of 10 points and recommended
super fast AF,outstanding IQ, this is the sharpest lens ever used and I used so many ........
    none.

if you do not like this lens , what can you potentially like it?

this is the shapest lens you can buy regardless of mount and price .

seriously, I owned many Ls and many Leicas , they are not even comparable to this lens , and considering its modest price and super fast and accurate AF , it is a no-brainer and the best of all current canon lenses.

I have had 2 copies of this one since I love it so much and do not want to damage it fast.

don't get me wrong its build quality is just fine ......maybe as good as it gets.

PS. I sold the 100 macro and 50 f1.4 because this lens beats them hands down and I am selling the 85f1.2L also.

  • Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

10 out of 10 points and recommended
super fast AF , wide range with good IQ except the barrel distortion
barrel distortion at 17mm is very pronounced but I have DXO.

I bought it as a part of my 40D kit so I got it for really cheap and how would be able to complain about it?

    it is sharp from 24mm to 85mm , peaks at 85mm f11.

for me , it is a great lens for travel as a light weight, do-all kind of lens.

usually , I use my EF-S17-55IS or Tamron 17-50 for my work but for my personal thing , I use this lens and just enjoy it...........I recommend it especially when you can get it with a 40D ..........use it with the10-22 that is another Canon's great lens and you wont have to deal with the distortion problem of this lens because the 10-22 has vrtually no distortion at all at 17mm.

any way, this is a good lens for digital cameras since all of us 've got computer at least PS or DXO.

I dont think distortion or CA are problem any more.

  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM

10 out of 10 points and recommended
perfect sharpness, excellent build , fast AF, vibrant color, use of a 67mm filter
    the white color barrel .

nothing to complain about it or can not complain anything about it other than the color of its barrel.

I wished it had been a black lens.

I hope Canon will make a black version of it.

This is the sharpest lens in the world in all mounts.

I tried all similar lenses , and I am sure this is sharper than most of primes in real life use with its 5 stop IS , it is better than what Canon says of it , is a 5 stop IS for me than 4 .

I am thinking of painting it with black color stuff .
