Lightweight, fast and sharp as a tack
    Not an AF-S lens

Nikon Professional User. I use this lens on the D300 and D200. It is a great little lens - lightweight and sharp. The recessed front glass means it can be used without a lens hood.

  • Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D AF Nikkor

10 out of 10 points and recommended
f4.5 at 105mm and well built
    not AF-S

Nikon professional user. I use this lens on my D300 and D200 for general outdoor work and macro. It is a good all-round lens but not as good as the pro lenses I use. New copies are fairly scarce in the UK but worth searching out if you want a good reliable lens at a reasonable price. At f4.5 for a 105mm lens it is a good buy.

Nikon professional user. This lens is a little cracker! Every camera bag should have one. Great on the D40, D300 and D200 if you want a portable bit of kit.

    super-lightweight and very sharp
    none

Nikon professional user. Bought as a lightweight lens to have in my bag when travelling.

Great little lens that is as sharp as any of my lenses.

Works well on the Nikon D300 and D200 bodies.

I have sold my copy as it did not have an in-built AF motor for the D40 I use on holiday. I will replace it soon with the +motor copy.

Two of my favourite pics were taken using this lens!

  • Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM

10 out of 10 points and recommended
    solid build and very sharp
    zoom ring quite heavy

    Nikon professional user.

I bought this lens to replace my Sigma EX 24-70 f2.8 and my Nikkor 28-105 f3.5-4.5 as it has optical stabilisation and macro.

Good choice of lens for studio work if you like ultra-sharp photographs without any effort. Very solid build.

Oddly, it feels quite heavy on the D300 and D200 cameras because of it's short chunky shape but it looks and feels like the EX pro range.

The aperture range is evenly spread over f2.8-4, and focusing is accurate and fast with the HSM.

The zoom ring doesn't need the creep lock.

This lens pairs well with the Nikkor 55-200 VR for blur-free outdoor work.

    fast and light long zoom
    plastic shoe

    Nikon professional user.

This lens should be in your camera bag if you like blur-free photographs. The VR is superb.

For outdoor work it is super-light and very sharp.

It is quite versatile on my D300 and D200 cameras when I don't want to carry a heavy zoom. Results are professional in good light.

Add it to the D40 kit lens for perfect holiday shots.

  • Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR DX AF-S Nikkor

ultra light and sharp lens for use on all DX cameras
    plastic shoe

    Nikon professional user.

This lens should be in your camera bag if you like simple blur-free photographs. The VR is superb.

It is super-light and sharp. Fine on my D300 and D3100 cameras when I don't want to carry a heavy zoom and the results are perfect in good light conditions.

Perfect holiday/travelling lens. Use a rubber hood to protect it from knocks.

10 out of 10 points and recommended
low-cost and highly efficient lens with useful focal lengths
    none

I am a professional Nikon user so I expect high performance, and this lens certainly provides superb handling and optical perfection at a very low cost.

Works perfectly with my D300 and D90 camera bodies when I want a light-weight reliable lens that covers 18-105mm. Instant focus and sharp as any of the professional zoom lenses I use.

On the D5100 camera body it is very efficient for travel and lifestyle photography. Amazingly sharp at all focal lengths.

I bought this one from Grays of Westminster.

  • Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical IF SP AF

10 out of 10 points and recommended
excellent build quality - sharp - fast to focus - low price

Bought for use with my Nikon D300 and D5100.

Light professional zoom lens with a constant aperture of f2.8. I've only had this lens a few weeks and it is already a favourite!

Solid and well-built. Made in Japan. A real photographers lens that fits the hand perfectly and very tactile to work with.

Focus is instant and although the focus ring moves in auto-focus mode it is completly silent and unobtrusive.

Photographs are wonderfully sharp and the colours are vibrant.

This model weighs 440g, which is about the same as my Nikon 18-105mm. And, the filter size is the same at 67mm.

I opted for the non-vibration compensation version of this lens as it has very good reports and also features in the D300 Digital Field Guide.

This version has a built-in autofocus motor for use on my D5100.

10 out of 10 points and recommended
    ultra-sharp and beautifully designed
    none

I have two of these lenses. Both black. They were bought with my Nikon Red J1 and Black J2.

Both lenses are ultra-sharp and so accurate and tactile to use. Sheer perfection.

The zoom ring is perfectly sized.

The black version of this lens is the best buy as it looks great with all of the Nikon 1 body colours.
