Photokina Special: The Angels of Cologne

Arriving in Cologne a few days ago, we took a walk in the Melaten cemetery across the street. The large Friedhof was populated, to our surprise, by a flock of wild parrots that screeched overhead as they flew from one tree to another. But what really caught our attention was the stonework. In his Tuesday report Mike looked at products on the booths of Fujifilm, Hasselblad, Lensbaby, Leica, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Samsung, Sigma and more. Wednesday's report included DxO Labs, Joby (makers of the Gorilla Pod), Lowepro, Nik Software and Vertus (the folks behind the Fluid Mask plugin for Photoshop). 08:12 EDT - Rounding out its Photokina announcements, Hasselblad has unveiled a new medium format digital SLR that sets a rather impressive record.

The Hasselblad H3D is available in two variants, with resolutions of 22 or 39 megapixels, and is the world's first 48mm full-frame DSLR. Yes, you read that right - that's a 48mm x 36mm image sensor that's twice the size of a 35mm film frame. 07:12 EDT - Among its Photokina announcements, Hasselblad has announced two new drum-based film scanners that are soon to ship.

The Hasselblad Flextight X1 and X5 are closely related, both being PC / Mac compatible, Firewire-connected units with 3 x 8000 pixel CCD sensors and a Rodenstock lens. The X1 is the cheaper of the two, with a pricetag of €9,500 and the ability to scan positive / negative film at 6300 dpi optical resolution, and a 60MB/minute scan speed.
