We have received an email from Lexar Media alerting us to a problem that has been discovered when using certain Lexar flash cards with the Nikon D1x and D1h digital cameras.

Owners of these cameras will want to check their flash cards immediately, to confirm whether they own any of the following Lexar flash cards:
  • 40x 256 MB
  • 40x 512 MB
  • 32x 1 GB
If you do own one or more of these cards, take note - a compatibility issue between the cards and Nikon's professional digital SLRs can potentially cause corruption and lost images. Lexar is offering a free firmware update to users of these cameras, and you should contact the company at (510) 413-1233 in the US for details on how to return your cards for update.

Lexar says that the "update pertains only to cards being used in the Nikon D1x & D1h cameras", so if you don't own one of these particular cameras, it is not necessary to have your cards returned for update.

Original Source Press Release:

Attention Nikon D1x & D1h users

Lexar has recently identified a rare compatibility issue between some of our 32x and 40x Professional Series CompactFlash cards and Nikon D1x & D1h cameras. Under certain conditions, the cards can become corrupted resulting in a standard "CHA" error message on the camera's LCD display. The affected cards can be identified by the card's serial number located at the bottom edge of the card opposite the connector. Cards with a serial number ending with the last 4 characters of 4D8D or 6DB4 should be updated with the latest firmware.

The CompactFlash cards affected are:

  • 40x 256 MB
  • 40x 512 MB
  • 32x 1 GB
If an error occurs, Lexar Media Image Rescue software - that was provided with the card at time of purchase - can be used to recover most images captured prior to the error and reformat the card.

A firmware update is available for the cards that addresses this issue, and recommends that all Nikon D1x & D1h users contact Lexar Pro Tech support at 510-413-1233 for details on returning the cards for a free firmware update. This update pertains only to cards being used in the Nikon D1x & D1h cameras.

If the last 4 characters of the serial number are OE1B, no action is required since these cards already contain the updated firmware.
