Fujifilm makes X-mount mirrorless even more affordable with the entry-level Fuji X-A1

Fujifilm has just taken the wraps off the 16.3 megapixel, APS-C sensor-shod Fuji X-A1, and it's the spitting image of last June's X-M1 -- yet somehow manages to shave one-quarter off its sibling's price tag. And when we say it's the spitting image, we mean it! The Fujifilm X-A1 appears next-to-identical in most respects. Both cameras feature what appears to be the exact same body design, save for the texturing of their grips. They also share the same processor, display, flash, Wi-Fi radio, and basic feature set.

So what's changed --...

Canon 70D review: Game-changing DSLR delivers best video autofocusing performance we’ve ever seen

The Canon 70D ushers in a new technology so unexpected that there's no way we could be disappointed -- even if it may not have delivered the significant upgrade in still image quality that everyone wanted or expected. We love when a camera manufacturer surprises us with a treat like Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. After all, a rare, groundbreaking innovation like this doesn't come around too often.

What's even better is that the 70D's full-time continuous autofocus system for video and live view shooting -- with phase detection...

Sony NEX-3N review: Camera for beginners delivers a smooth step-up from point-and-shoots and a terrific bang for the buck

In developing a replacement to last year's successful NEX-F3, Sony aimed to deliver nothing less than the world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lens system that featured an APS-C-sized sensor. Mission accomplished with the entry-level Sony NEX-3N, which pares down both the size and price from its predecessor -- albeit with a few sacrifices along the way. The end result is a camera that may present the most seamless step up from a point-and-shoot experience that we've ever seen.

And it's not just the compact form and value of...

Olympus E-M1 first impressions updated: More info and gallery photos posted

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Olympus announced the OM-D E-M1 compact system camera. The E-M1 is the flagship camera with which the company plans to unite its mirrorless and mirrored product lines, and bring a new lease on life to Four Thirds lenses everywhere. You may have already seen our coverage yesterday, but if so, you'll want to take another look. The reason? Over the last day, we've steadily been adding loads more info on -- and gallery photos from -- the Olympus E-M1!

Missed the announcement at the time, and...

Olympus E-M1 review: First impressions and samples from the new OM-D flagship that also succeeds the E-5 Four Thirds DSLR

With the announcement today of the Olympus E-M1 (see sample photos here!), two birds have been killed with one stone. The E-M1 is both a new flagship for the OM-D series, and a replacement for the long-in-the-tooth Olympus E-5 digital SLR. In one smooth move, Olympus has given the OM-D series a new aspirational benchmark, and answered the concerns of photographers shooting with its Four Thirds-series SLRs, who've long wanted to know the future of their seemingly-dormant format. And it's answered in style, delivering a camera that...

Nikon P7800 and S02 previews: New Coolpix cameras span the range from serious to seriously small

Nikon just took the wraps off two new fixed-lens cameras for its Coolpix line: The Nikon P7800 enthusiast compact, and the sleek little Nikon S02 point-and-shoot. Both replace existing models, and bring some very worthwhile upgrades.

The Nikon P7800 follows on from last year's P7700, and it keeps its 12.2-megapixel 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor, as well as its bright 28-200mm f/2.0 - f/4.0 lens. One key upgrade is sure to be popular because it answers a key concern with the earlier camera. The viewfinder that was dropped in the P7700 is back,...

Sony QX100, QX10 reviews: Connected camera duo ditch the camera body in favor of your smartphone

Almost every dedicated camera on the market shares one thing in common: It is -- in some form or other -- a box housing a lens. The long-rumored, large-sensor Sony QX100 and its sibling the long-zoom QX10 don't just buck that trend, they toss it into orbit. The box is gone, leaving only the lens barrel behind. The result is a design radically different to anything that has gone before -- a premium lens paired wirelessly with your smartphone -- and one that aims to change the way you think about photography.

The...

Canon T5i review: Can the tiny tweaks breathe more life into Canon’s consumer flagship Rebel DSLR?

When the Canon T5i launched earlier this year, many were quick to criticize its very minimal upgrade. There are no two ways around it: in most respects, the T5i is the same camera as that which it replaced.

There's more to the story, though, which makes sense of the slight changes made. And sometimes, maintaining the status quo can be a good thing. The earlier T4i was a capable camera, and the Canon T5i retains every feature while adding a couple of minor tweaks and better kit lens. Perhaps more importantly, its list price is now lower than...

Panasonic GX7 First Shots posted: Mirrorless camera’s upgraded sensor promises improved image quality

The latest camera to be put through its paces in the IR Lab is the much-talked-about Panasonic GX7, and we've published First Shots taken with the mirrorless compact system camera for you to examine. The GX7 follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, 2011's Panasonic GX1, and like that camera, its mission is to provide a worthy street shooter for the enthusiast photographer.

But the Panasonic GX7 is no mere level-up with a few more megapixels: Many of the most important features are brand-new, including a...

Olympus E-P5 review: New PEN flagship mirrorless camera not only bests its predecessor, but takes on the OM-D E-M5

Don't let the PEN moniker fool you. The Olympus E-P5 not only outshines its PEN predecessor, the E-P3, but also in a few ways outpaces its older, acclaimed cousin, the OM-D E-M5. Though the E-P5 and E-M5 boast a lot of the same advanced photographic capabilities -- thanks to their shared 16-megapixel Four Thirds Live MOS imager -- the new mirrorless model has some new tricks up its sleeve.

For one, the PEN E-P5's build and design is decidedly different, and in fact we prefer its more streamlined shape, its robust mostly-metal...

Canon 70D First Shots posted (again): Pixel peep test images taken with the full production model of this groundbreaking DSLR

A few weeks ago, we gave you a sneak peek by publishing beta First Shots taken with a pre-production model of the Canon 70D, but we now have the final version of the hot DSLR in the IR Lab, and we've posted new test images for you to analyze. Like many of you, we're very excited about the Canon 70D, and think it represents one of the most innovative developments in DSLR technology in a long time.

The 70D's image sensor, a 20.2-megapixel APS-C-type CMOS chip...

Sony A3000 review: First impressions of the SLR-like, incredibly affordable E-mount mirrorless camera

Since Sony launched its first mirrorless cameras -- the Alpha NEX-3 and NEX-5 -- back in early 2010, its E-mount has gone on to become extremely popular. With the Sony A3000, the consumer electronics giant asks -- and answers -- a question: Does the typical mirrorless form factor cause some photographers to look elsewhere?

After all, mirrorless cameras typically focus on pared-down size, and can be less comfortable in-hand than an SLR due to smaller grips. They also don't look like the cameras pros use. Sony clearly thinks there's...

Sony NEX-5T review: Initial look at the mirrorless camera that takes the pain out of Wi-Fi

In late 2012, Sony brought its NEX mirrorless camera series into the hybrid autofocus age, with the debut of the NEX-5R. Just ten months later, that camera gets a more modest refresh, with the arrival of the Sony NEX-5T.

The NEX-5T will be of interest to photographers using certain smart devices -- be they phones or tablets -- running the Android, Blackberry, Symbian and Windows Phone operating systems. That's because it now includes a short-range Near Field Communications radio, used to simplify the process of creating a...

Canon PowerShot previews: SX510 and SX170 cameras get evolutionary upgrades, PowerShot N a Facebook tweak

Canon launched a total of five new PowerShot models today, including the Canon G16 and Canon S120 enthusiast compact digital cameras. But the manufacturer made sure it also had something for consumer photographers, announcing evolutionary upgrades to two SX-series long zoom cameras, and making a Facebook-friendly tweak to the PowerShot N. Here's the skinny:

Canon SX510 HS
The Canon SX500 IS stands as one of the most popular compact digital cameras on the planet today, as of press time ranking 4th on Amazon's...

Canon 55-250mm IS STM lens preview: Is this tele zoom an ideal complement to the Canon 18-55mm IS STM kit lens?

Billed as the "perfect companion" to the Canon 70D, SL1 and T5i, Canon has announced a new long-zoom telephoto lens, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. This lens is the successor to the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens, which featured Canon's gear-driven DC motor focusing system. This new model marks the sixth lens to utilize Canon's Stepping Motor (STM) focusing system, which as we've seen on other lenses, provides fast yet extremely quiet autofocus. Popular HD-DSLRs, like Canon's upcoming 70D, will benefit from the STM focusing as it will...

Combined with a free companion app for iOS and Android smart devices, users are able to browse and print photos and documents from many popular social networking and cloud storage services such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Dropbox, Picasa, Evernote and more.

The Canon PPS app connects to these social network and cloud...

Sony 18-55mm SAM II lens review: Sony’s kit lens for Alpha APS-C DSLRs gets an update

Sony A58 review: Stellar image quality just one reason we think the A58 ranks among the best DSLRs for beginners

In creating its entry-level Sony A58 DSLR, the consumer electronics giant took its well-regarded predecessor, the A57, added some significant tech upgrades -- most notably its new 20.1-megapixel APS-C sensor -- and then made just a few compromises to deliver the new model at a $200 lower price point. By doing so, the A58 effectively replaces not just the mid-entry-level A57 but also the true-entry-level A37. But does the camera split the difference and sit somewhere in the middle of these two cameras, or does it outshine them both?

Panasonic GH3 review: Pro-level video for a fraction of the price? Yes, but that’s not the only reason we love this mirrorless camera

Panasonic's flagship GH-series cameras have been widely praised for their video capabilities and have long been in demand by professional videographers and filmmakers. However, the product engineers behind the company's latest compact system camera, the Panasonic GH3, didn't focus solely on upgrading its movie mojo. They developed a brand new 16-megapixel Live MOS sensor, and added an advanced optical low-pass filter. Together, these help the GH3 deliver excellent image quality across the board. Both still photos and videos trump that...
