Pretec to ship 12GB CompactFlash soon
By
(Friday, April 30, 2004 - 13:02 EDT)

We just caught notice of a Pretec press release distributed last month to coincide with CeBIT 2004 that details quite a dramatic price cut on the company's 6GB solid-state CompactFlash card, and predicts that a 12GB card will be shipping by the end of the year.

We first told readers about the 12GB card in September last year, when the 6GB cards had just begun sampling at a cost of US$7499. Now, just six months later, the 6GB cards have seen a 53% price drop to $3499, and the 12GB card is predicted to be shipping in the second half of 2004 at a cost of $9999 ($833.25 per GB).

The pricing will likely see these cards restricted to uses where changing flash cards could mean losing a valuable photo, as currently it would be far cheaper to buy several smaller cards for the same total capacity. Still, there's no arguing a 12GB card will be an impressive achievement!
