Kodak's Z980 digital camera. Photo provided by Eastman Kodak Co. Kodak: Four new digicams

Alongside its digital video camera announcement, Eastman Kodak Co. has today taken the wraps off four new digital camera models.

The Kodak Z980 digital camera combines a whopping 24x optical zoom Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon-branded lens with a 26mm to 624mm equivalent zoom range, and a twelve megapixel image sensor. Given the power of the zoom lens, image stabilization is pretty much a must, as is an electronic viewfinder - and the Kodak Z980 includes both. The Z980's styling is reminiscent of a single-lens reflex camera, and includes a portrait grip with a secondary shutter release button. The SLR-like features continue with a hot shoe, capable of accepting Kodak's optional P20 flash strobe. Other features include a 3.0" LCD display, 720p movie mode, Kodak's "Smart Capture" mode which automatically adjusts the camera's settings, plus SD / SDHC card storage, and power from four AA batteries.

The Kodak Z980 is undoubtedly the most interesting announcement of the group, and we're curious to run that 24x lens through its paces in our labs to see how it fares. Alongside the Z980, Kodak has also made several other new digicam announcements for the Consumer Electronics Show, however. The Kodak EasyShare M380 features a ten megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom lens, and 2.7” LCD display. The Kodak M340 has the same resolution and LCD size, but replaces the lens with a 3x optical zoom that offers rather less reach. Finally, the Kodak EasyShare M320 has a similar 3x optical zoom and 2.7" LCD to the M340, but drops the resolution just a touch to nine megapixels.

The Kodak Z980 will ship this spring, priced at $399.95. The Kodak M320 will be the first of the new M-series cameras to ship next month, priced at $129. The Kodak EasyShare M340 and its sibling the Kodak M380 will both follow in March, with the former priced at $149, and the latter at $179.
